About The Position

The Staff Attorney serves as primary operational legal counsel supporting the organization’s multi-state consumer lending, immigration lending, and solar leasing programs. This role is responsible for regulatory compliance implementation, contract drafting and negotiation, entity governance support, and day-to-day legal guidance to internal stakeholders. The Staff Attorney works closely with the General Counsel to manage regulatory risk across multiple jurisdictions and legal entities and serves as the primary legal partner to operations, lending, and program teams.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 1-2+ years of relevant legal experience.
  • Demonstrated experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to manage multiple projects across entities and jurisdictions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in renewable energy, solar leasing, real estate/property law, or structured finance.
  • Experience serving as counsel of record or providing primary legal support for a subsidiary or business unit.
  • Experience with contract lifecycle management systems.
  • Familiarity with CDFIs, nonprofit organizations, or mission-driven financial institutions.
  • Experience in multi-state regulatory environments.
  • Background in vendor due diligence, risk assessment, or compliance review processes.

Responsibilities

  • Consumer Finance Regulatory Compliance: Advise on federal and state laws (TILA, ECOA, FCRA, EFTA, UDAAP/UDAP, SCRA), support multi-state/immigration/solar lending compliance, manage licensing, draft policies, respond to regulators, and monitor legal developments.
  • Contracts & Commercial Transactions: Draft, review, and negotiate loan documents, solar leases, vendor/SaaS, servicing, data-sharing, partnership, and intercompany agreements; maintain templates and flag high-risk issues.
  • Corporate & Nonprofit Governance: Prepare board consents/resolutions, support nonprofit compliance and Form 990 review, and assist with board materials and intercompany structuring.
  • Entity & Structural Management: Form and maintain subsidiaries, draft operating agreements, and align intercompany funding and documentation with liability isolation strategy.
  • Disputes & Risk Management: Respond to consumer complaints and demand letters, support collections and litigation (with outside counsel), oversee risk tracking, and manage document retention/litigation holds.
  • Cross-Functional Legal Support: Provide practical guidance to lending, operations, compliance, finance, and program teams; lead compliance trainings and advise on product development risks.
