About The Position

The Staff Attorney in the Victims Assistance Project will provide direct and comprehensive legal services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Services will include advice, negotiation, and litigation in family law and matrimonial matters. The attorney will also offer holistic representation in related civil legal issues stemming from abuse or violence, such as housing, public benefits, disability, employment, consumer, education, health, and elder law. The attorney will engage in outreach and education efforts with community members, advocates, and service providers to promote awareness and access to legal services.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school with zero to five years of experience.
  • Admission to practice law in New York State. Law school graduates registered for the New York State Bar Exam, or eligible for admission on motion, are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong litigation, negotiation, and legal writing skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and serving low-income communities.
  • Ability to manage a high-volume caseload with efficiency and attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in family law, domestic violence advocacy, or trauma-informed legal practice.
  • Familiarity with civil legal issues affecting survivors.
  • Bilingual or multilingual capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide trauma-informed legal advice and representation to survivors in family and matrimonial law matters.
  • Represent clients in court proceedings including custody, visitation, orders of protection, divorce, and support.
  • Address ancillary civil legal issues including housing, benefits, employment, and healthcare access.
  • Conduct legal research and draft pleadings, motions, memoranda, and advocacy letters.
  • Maintain accurate and timely case records in compliance with LASMNY and grant requirements.
  • Participate in community outreach, education, and training efforts.
  • Collaborate with service providers and advocates to ensure coordinated support for survivors.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to LASMNY’s mission.
