About The Position

The Staff Attorney for Tenant's Rights at Southeast Louisiana Legal Services (SLLS) is responsible for providing legal representation and support to residential tenants facing housing insecurity in Orleans Parish. This role involves handling a caseload of landlord-tenant cases, advocating for tenants' rights, and assisting with various legal and social services to stabilize housing situations. The attorney will work closely with a team that includes legal assistants, paralegals, and social workers to ensure effective representation and outreach to the community.

Requirements

• Licensed to practice law in Louisiana.
• Proficiency in written and oral communication.
• Strong client counseling and advocacy skills.
• Ability to respond to emergencies and demonstrate dependability.
• Self-motivation and dedication to serving vulnerable populations.

Responsibilities

• Handle a caseload of Orleans Parish landlord-tenant cases.
• Provide legal advice and brief services to clients.
• Represent clients in First City and Second City Courts.
• Assist with staffing the Eviction Help Desks.
• Defend against subsidy terminations and illegal lockouts.
• Support advocacy goals and assist with case compliance and reporting.
• Engage in education and outreach efforts related to tenant rights.
