About The Position

The Staff Attorney at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington is responsible for providing legal advice and representation, particularly in civil law matters. This part-time role involves recruiting licensed attorneys for pro bono cases, mentoring less experienced attorneys, and conducting training sessions for potential volunteers. The attorney will also engage in community outreach to enhance the visibility of legal services offered by Catholic Charities, ensuring that low-income residents have access to necessary legal assistance.

Requirements

• Law Degree (J.D.)
• Active status member of both the District of Columbia and Maryland bars
• Two years' experience in general civil law
• Completion of Continuing Legal Education as required for licensing

Responsibilities

• Interview individuals seeking legal assistance and advise clients on possible options through proper interpretation of current laws.
• Provide ongoing legal representation to clients, including drafting documents, correspondence, and client applications/petitions.
• Recruit active status DC and Maryland licensed attorneys for pro bono civil law cases in various areas such as family law and landlord-tenant disputes.
• Develop a pool of attorney mentors to guide less experienced attorneys in civil law cases.
• Conduct training sessions on the Legal Network at various organizations to potential volunteers.
• Enhance the visibility of Catholic Charities' services to low-income residents to increase service utilization.
• Conduct outreach activities in the community regarding legal issues.
• Assist the Director with internal and external reporting.
• Supervise law student interns and volunteers.
• Serve as a liaison between the program and community partners.
