The Staff Attorney will serve as a key legal advisor for the Oakland Unified School District, providing comprehensive legal counsel on a variety of regulatory matters. This role involves investigating, responding to, and representing the District in various legal proceedings, including EEOC/DFEH and PERB charges, OCR complaints, and inquiries from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The Staff Attorney will also provide guidance to school sites and the Student Discipline Hearing panel regarding student discipline issues, ensuring that all actions comply with applicable laws and regulations. In addition to student discipline matters, the Staff Attorney will advise and represent the District in labor and employment issues. This includes drafting statutory notices, representing the District in OAH hearings, arbitrations, mediations, contract negotiations, labor management meetings, and litigation. The role requires drafting and reviewing contracts and agreements, providing proactive legal advice to various departments such as Human Resources, Payroll, IT, Risk Management, and Procurement, as well as school sites. The Staff Attorney will also handle public records requests, provide advice on student records and FERPA compliance, and represent the District in civil litigation and administrative hearings before state and federal courts and agencies. The position demands a high level of confidentiality, as the Staff Attorney will have access to sensitive information regarding employer-employee relations and negotiations. The attorney will also be responsible for providing training to District management and staff on relevant legal issues, ensuring that all personnel are informed and compliant with legal standards. This role is essential in maintaining the legal integrity of the District and supporting its mission to provide quality education to students.
