About The Position

The Staff Attorney II provides legal representation either within a clinical program or as part of a free‑standing program. In clinical programs, the attorney is primarily responsible for handling cases that extend beyond the academic semester and for providing client representation during summer months or whenever the College of Law is not in session. For free‑standing programs, the attorney manages a reasonable caseload aligned with the requirements of the program’s grant. Responsibilities include maintaining case outcome data, ensuring compliance with grant‑monitoring requirements, and supporting timely and accurate grant reporting. Special Job Dimensions: This position involves working with people’s highly sensitive, confidential, and often traumatic information. One is advised to take proper self-care in this position. Overnight travel for hearings happens regularly. Requirements

  • For non-immigration based positions: working knowledge of Oklahoma law and procedure.
  • For immigration based positions: In depth knowledge of immigration law, especially humanitarian and family-based cases.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite and case management software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent Legal research and writing skills.
  • Public speaking skills.
  • Knowledge and adherence to the rules of professional responsibility.
  • Must have Juris Doctorate.
  • Three to Five years of related experience required.
  • Multi-cultural lawyering with inherent bias-awareness required.
  • For non-immigration related positions: Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Oklahoma.
  • For immigration related positions: Must be licensed to practice law in any state, preference for Oklahoma.

Nice To Haves

  • Fluent in Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages docket of cases.
  • Maintains client communications, predominantly in Spanish language (for immigration cases), verbal and written.
  • Supervises legal fellows in direct representation and community outreach tasks.
  • Provides legal consultation as community outreach effort.
  • Writes grant applications and reports for program funding.
  • Networks with community partners and stakeholders.
  • Assists clients in range of immigration matters in affirmative and defensive cases.
  • Continuously updates working knowledge of the law.
  • Prepares and files applications and other pleadings with adjudicators.
  • Represents clients in hearings.
  • Counsels’ clients on case decision-making.
