About The Position

To provide legal representation and counsel to low and middle-income litigants in housing and consumer law matters in Monroe, Ontario, and surrounding counties. In addition, the staff attorney will provide community outreach, education, and training to our community partners.

Requirements

  • Possess strong PC skills to include Word and excel.
  • Juris Doctor.
  • Admission to the New York Bar

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal counsel and representation in proceedings involving housing and consumer issues.
  • Draft and/or review all pleadings, motions, and papers
  • Interview clients
  • Conduct disclosure and investigation; file motions
  • Consult and negotiate with other counsel and, as appropriate, other parties
  • Represent clients at all appearances, hearings, and proceedings
  • File notices of appeal, settle orders and records and represent clients in other post-dispositional proceedings before the court.
  • Provide legal counsel to first time home buyers.
  • Provide legal counsel to homeowners at risk of foreclosure.
  • Transcribe complete, accurate, and detailed contacts in all cases file through our case management system, LegalServer.
  • Conduct legal research in each case as required.
  • Maintain knowledge of legislative changes and current case law and attending CLE trainings.
  • Consult with and review work of assigned support staff.
  • Conduct community outreach, training, and education. Also providing information regarding housing issues and Legal Aid Society program services.
  • Participate in Legal Aid Society office functions, including program staff meetings and other Legal Aid Society office meetings.
  • Provide legal support to other programs from time to time as may be necessary.
  • Must have reliable transportation, as multi-county travel may be required.
