About The Position

The Staff Accountant role at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles is a member of the accounting team that supports in the complex accounting functions of the bureau. This position operates on a dynamic team in a government accounting environment. The Staff Accountant role supports in Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, revenue collection, complex reconciliations and recurring accounting functions, and will work closely with unit leadership to complete these tasks and support the Bureau.

  • Ability to prepare clear narrative and statistical reports, financial statements, projections, and schedules, and to analyze and interpret information from those reports.

  • Ability to recommend improvements to accounting controls, financial review processes, and business practices.
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of a project team.
  • Education, training, and/or experience in accounting, business administration, financial planning, budgeting, or another related field demonstrating competency in analyzing data and records, interpreting policies, rules, and laws, identifying process and procedure deficiencies, and developing practical solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the Accounting team in completing reconciliation of accounting records. This includes a reconciliation of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Petty Cash, and other programs operated by the BMV Accounting Unit.
  • Supports in the completion of complex accounting functions such as incoming wires, monthly and quarterly journals, and complex Accounts Payable documents.
  • Supports in all aspects of the Accounts Payable process as needed and serves as a primary point of contact on verifying the coding of invoices.
  • Supports in all complex Accounts Receivable functions, with a particular emphasis on BMV Online Services and those receivables which are processed directly through Advantage.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in accounting functions within the BMV.
  • Maintains a familiarity of internal controls, GAAP and GASB accounting practices, and State of Maine accounting practices as outlined within the SAAM manual.
  • Supports in identifying, implementing, and overseeing internal controls for the Accounting Unit and supports Accounting in providing centralized oversight to the financial operations of the BMV.
  • Collaborates with Accounting and Finance leadership to complete all monthly, quarterly, and annual reports, journals, or other accounting functions. Additionally collaborates with internal stakeholders and Bureau leadership to provide insight and support to Accounting related functions.
