About The Position

Durango School District 9-R is accepting applications for a Staff Accountant in the Finance Department. This is a full-time position with competitive pay and benefits package. The position begins on July 5, 2023, or as soon as possible. The Staff Accountant will assist with accounting processes for the school district, performing functions that consist of monitoring, reconciliation, and analyzing financial information. The role includes substantiating financial transactions by auditing documents for compliance, providing training and customer service to end users regarding accounting and financial system procedures, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and district policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in the field of accounting, finance, or related business field preferred.
  • An Associate's Degree in the field of accounting, finance, or related business field and three (3) additional years of experience may be substituted for this requirement.
  • 1-3 years' experience using computerized accounting, check writing or accounting systems preferred.

  • Knowledge of GAAP accounting standards.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with current district financial programs preferred; required within 3 months after hire.

Responsibilities

  • Process outgoing payments to vendors in a timely manner and in compliance with financial policies and procedures.
  • Process day to day financial transactions, including verifying, classifying and recording accounts payable data.
  • Reconcile the accounts payable ledger to ensure that all bills and payments are accounted for and properly posted.
  • Review, verify and issue payment for employee travel and expense reimbursements according to District and Board guidelines.
  • Generate routine and ad hoc analysis to ensure the accuracy of financial data and consistency with approved budgets.
  • Provide timely feedback to schools, departments, Directors, and District leadership to identify and resolve issues and discrepancies.
  • Receive, analyze, and verify coding and authorizations on materials requisitions.
  • Provide support to schools/departments by resolving questions on requisitions, deposits, purchase orders and other fiscal operations.
  • Mail checks and maintain an orderly file of invoice documentation for reference.
  • Maintain neat and orderly records from prior fiscal periods in designated areas.
  • Generate necessary reporting to the Colorado Department of Education and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in the external audit process, including audit work papers, reporting schedules and adjustments.
  • Contribute to the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.
  • Develop, coordinate, implement and maintain financial operational internal control processes, procedures, and guidance.
  • Disseminate changes and update all relevant district documentation as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
