About The Position

The Staff Accountant - Expense provides the Treasury Department with Accounting assistance for VMF's monthly, quarterly, and annual closes. This position reports to the Treasury Supervisor and monitors treasury processes, researches discrepancies, and supports special projects aimed at process improvement and automation across the department. The Staff Accountant is responsible for account reconciliations for Uncashed Checks, Cash Clearing, Accounts Payable (AP) Clearing and Escrow Liabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 1-2 years' experience preferred.
  • Experience with Excel, including its formulas and advanced features.
  • Open to receive and implement feedback.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to manage deadlines.
  • Capable of dealing with changes that can and will occur periodically.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate within a team environment.
  • Good sense of urgency and follow up.
  • Ability to manage multiple and/or conflicting responsibilities.

  • Basic knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Responsibilities

  • Reconciles and monitors Cash Clearing and AP Clearing General Ledger (GL) to ensure payments processed for VMF and Silverton Mortgage align with the primary financial institution, enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, and the general ledger.
  • Reviews uncashed checks from VMF's primary financial institution reporting, negotiable items in ERP system, Automated Clearing House (ACH) transactions, Positive Pay, voided items, and paid items.
  • Compiles Uncashed Check for Silverton Mortgage and VMF Departments to review, ensuring it reconciles with the bank's negotiable items and the Cash Clearing GL activity.
  • Reviews department actions taken on aged checks and creates reporting for upper management.
  • Identifies any items needing review for Escheatment and ensures appropriate action is taken by the department.
  • Reconciles and monitors AP Clearing general ledger to ensure AP items have cleared and no discrepancies need to be reclassed.
  • Reviews and reconciles escrow funds for VMF & Silverton loans to ensure funds set aside in escrow accounts match the liabilities owed, providing accuracy and transparency in financial reporting.
  • Identifies and addresses any variances in escrow funds, implementing corrective measures as necessary.
  • Develops and refines queries, manipulates data to required formats, and identifies process enhancements, while also undertaking special projects to fulfill senior management requirements.
  • Manages multiple accounting initiatives concurrently, while fulfilling routine responsibilities with precision.
  • Provides support in implementing new company processes and systems, ensuring smooth transitions and effective integration through various VMF departments.
  • Supports Treasury operations by aiding in cash management, wire transfers, and financial reporting tasks, as needed.
  • Collects prior year's origination expenses from numerous departments.
  • Consolidates origination expense data to propose amounts for the next fiscal year.
  • Analyzes year-over-year changes and provides detailed explanations for cost fluctuations.
  • Coordinates and leads meetings with the Assistant Controller and Controller for review and approval.
  • Collaborates on all accounting aspects of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including financial analysis and the creation of reporting schedules.
  • Supports Salaries, General, & Administrative (SG&A) Accountant with journal entries for monthly accruals and accrual releases including but not limited to, team members' expense reports, credit cards, bond billing, legal, insurance, contests, etc.
  • Partners with Accounts Payable and VMF & Silverton Mortgage lines of business to improve SG&A-related expenses coding accuracy.
