About The Position

Helping People. Changing Lives. The Veteran Advocate conducts outreach throughout San Luis Obispo County to identify, engage, and screen Veteran families who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness. This role includes street and creek outreach, relationship‑building with community partners, and connecting Veterans to essential services. The Veteran Advocate supports CAPSLO’s mission by ensuring Veterans are informed, supported, and linked to resources that promote housing stability and well-being. Requirements

  • Must be a Veteran with other than dishonorable discharge
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 6 months of experience in human services and/or community outreach
  • Has dependable, insured transportation and a valid California driver’s license (mileage reimbursed) and an acceptable driving record; DMV printout and proof of insurance required
  • Computer literacy including Word, Excel, and data tracking programs
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to build rapport with diverse populations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Responsibilities

  • Conduct countywide outreach, including non‑traditional methods to locate hard‑to‑reach Veterans
  • Scout areas frequented by homeless individuals
  • Build and maintain relationships with service providers
  • Educate community partners on SSVF program criteria
  • Interview and assess Veterans for eligibility and service needs
  • Provide referrals and resource linkages for eligible and non-eligible individuals
  • Assist with transportation when part of a case plan
  • Distribute program materials throughout the county
  • Maintain accurate documentation including case notes, logs, and reports
  • Uphold confidentiality and safety practices
