About The Position

Responsible for various aspects of vivarium operations including performing various technical procedures and assisting scientists with conducting surgical studies/experiments. In addition, responsible for performing routine small animal husbandry, animal health monitoring, cage changing, operation/ preventative maintenance of facility equipment and maintains inventory of supplies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma / Associates degree and 5 years or more of previous experience conducting various technical procedures and experiments in a Vivarium setting.
  • Requires deep experience in animal husbandry
  • Developing specialized skills through job-related training and on-the-job experience
  • Applies relevant skills and substantial understanding in a range of processes, procedures and systems to carry out assignments
  • Seek opportunities to implement the 3 Rs (Reduction, Refinement, and Replacement)
  • Extensive knowledge of vivarium operations
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act regulations and the guide for the care and use of Laboratory animals
  • Knowledge of BSL procedures
  • Ability to transport equipment and supplies throughout facility
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, team environment
  • Ability to work inside a controlled environment under strict atmospheric, temperature and humidity standardized parameters
  • Can accommodate a flexible working schedule; may need to work hours outside the regular working times of M-F, 9-5, including weekends and Holidays

Responsibilities

  • Works closely with in-vivo research scientists to conduct pharmacokinetics (PK) studies in animals by IV infusion or injection (IV/SQ/PO) and sampling by catheter, tail vein, via orbital sinus, or cardiac puncture
  • Conducts surgical support on rats and mice such as providing pre and post op treatment care
  • Perform in-vitro studies including sampling culture and dilutions
  • Maintain sample documentation and utilize electronic sampling systems
  • Coordinate maintenance on vivarium and laboratory clinical research equipment
  • Ensure established SOPs are followed and may help in creating new ones as required
  • Assist with animal breeding including record keeping, health checks, and PCR sampling
  • Uses preventative medicine techniques such as collecting and submitting samples and sentinels for disease surveillance
  • Provide training to vivarium and research personnel
  • Support inspection readiness by ensuring compliance with IACUC guidelines
  • Support environmental enrichment programs and assessment / introduction of novel items as needed
  • May perform routine animal husbandry activities; provides quality support in the animal facility cage wash areas.
  • Cage changing, collects dirty cages and equipment, removes bedding and food, completes cage pre-wash and sanitation, runs cage washer, receives and unpacks supplies, stocks supplies, maintains appropriate inventory of clean cages, supplies, autoclaves cages and water, maintaining sanitation in treatment and surgery facilities, instrument cleaning and sterilization, etc.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned
