About The Position

Superior Energy Services is currently seeking a Sr. Tax Manager - State Income Tax and State and Local Indirect Tax to join our team in Houston, TX (Downtown) (On-Site 5 days). This position involves managing the preparation and filing of all state and local tax returns, including direct taxes (income, franchise, gross receipts) and indirect taxes (sales/use and property). The role requires leading SALT planning initiatives, monitoring changes in tax legislation, managing business license registrations, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance. The Sr. Tax Manager will also drive continuous improvement in SALT processes and assist in state tax provision work for financial reporting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Tax, or related field; CPA desired.
  • Minimum 15 years of SALT experience, including at least 5 years within an in-house corporate tax department.
  • A minimum of 8 years of SALT experience is required, including at least 3 years within an in-house corporate tax department.
  • Hands-on experience using ERP systems and tax compliance software.
  • Experience in a high-growth or dynamic business environment.
  • Proven expertise in both direct and indirect state and local taxation.
  • Solid grasp of general accounting principles and accounting operations.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the preparation and filing of all state and local tax returns, including direct and indirect taxes.
  • Lead SALT planning initiatives, such as nexus and exposure reviews, apportionment and sourcing studies, and credit & incentive evaluations.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in state and local tax legislation, regulations, and case law.
  • Manage business license registrations, renewals, and compliance across relevant jurisdictions.
  • Prepare extensions and estimates for various state and local jurisdictions.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with internal stakeholders and external advisors.
  • Drive continuous improvement in SALT processes through automation and technology adoption.
  • Assist in state tax provision work for financial reporting under ASC 740.
  • Perform monthly account reconciliations for SALT-related general ledger accounts.
  • Manage state and local tax controversies and audits.
  • Research and draft technical memoranda regarding state and local tax questions.
  • Analyze state tax considerations related to business restructuring projects and intercompany transactions.
  • Work extensively with D365, OneSource OTP, Alteryx, and other financial systems.
  • Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to other team members.
