About The Position

The Sr. Tax Analyst reviews workbooks and returns for filing and remitting payments of state and local indirect taxes including sales and use tax, gross receipts tax and beverage taxes. Assists management with indirect tax audits and work to minimize corporate tax liability through sound application of tax laws and regulations. A role on our Finance and Accounting team involves helping UNFI maintain and grow its financial health as we continue to transform and scale. We need to ensure that our financial analysis and statements revolve around constant communication with our partners within the organization as well as outside to provide the most current statistics for our business health. By being attentive to details, trends, and inefficiencies, and communicating with our teams, you'll be key to our success and continued growth as North America's premier grocery wholesaler.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Pursuit of CPA/MST/other advanced degree preferred.
  • 5 years+ of tax experience in a public accounting firm or in-house corporate tax department.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong tax research skills.
  • Intermediate understanding of indirect tax concepts.
  • Intermediate to advanced MS Excel skills.
  • Experience with software such as or similar to Oracle Financials and use tax automation software preferred.
  • Desire to work independently while effectively collaborating as part of a team to accomplish shared goals.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships throughout the UNFI organization and with external auditors.
  • Ability to take initiative while seeking appropriate mentorship.

Responsibilities

  • Review state and local indirect tax returns and related reports prepared by analysts to ensure Company compliance with tax laws and regulations.
  • Ensure all state and local indirect tax returns are filed and paid timely to state and local taxing jurisdictions.
  • Communicate indirect tax filing deadlines and updates to analysts on a monthly basis.
  • Review and approve indirect tax accounting entries prior to the close of each fiscal period.
  • Review and approve reconciliation of indirect tax accounts to the general ledger prior to the close of each fiscal period.
  • Identify, plan, and research tax treatments that minimize tax liability through sound and informed application of tax laws and regulations permitting alternative treatment of taxable items.
  • Research new tax legislation and court decisions to determine effect on the Company.
  • Working with others in the organization to ensure that systems are working as intended to accurately collect and report indirect taxes.
  • Completes indirect tax special projects as assigned by management.
  • Assists in the supervision and/or mentoring of tax analysts.
  • Assists in the training of tax analysts to meet all company strategic goals and initiatives.
