The Sr. SQL DBA position in San Ramon involves expert-level SQL Server Database Administration, including SQL Server on VMWare (on premise), Azure SQL Database, and Azure SQL Managed Instance, as well as SQL Server Reporting Server (SSRS). The role requires the installation, configuration, and maintenance of MSSQL databases across production, development, and UAT environments. The DBA will monitor database performance to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security, while also optimizing and fine-tuning databases for better query performance and scalability. Additionally, the DBA will implement and manage backup and recovery procedures to protect databases against data loss and ensure quick restoration when necessary. The position also involves evaluating patch releases, managing CI/CD pipelines for Azure DevOps or Flyway tools, and maintaining documentation about the database. Regular proactive capacity planning and reviews of all SQL Server databases are also part of the responsibilities, along with producing weekly and monthly management reports. The DBA will manage SQL server and Windows security audits and provide after-hours support through an on-call rotation and weekend coverage.

  • Knowledge of Azure cloud and 3+ years of experience in Azure SQL Server Managed Instances or Azure SQL Server.
  • 5+ years of experience with backups, restores, and recovery models.
  • 5+ years of experience of High Availability (HA), Availability Groups (AG), and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server.
  • Hands-on experience with database migration tools and methodologies, particularly to Azure SQL Database or Azure SQL Managed Instance.
  • Proficiency with T-SQL for querying, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong knowledge of backup, restore, and recovery models (SQL Server Native Backup or third-party tools such as Avamar or Commvault).
  • Experience with high-availability solutions (Always On Availability Groups, SQL Clustering, Replication, or Log Shipping).
  • Familiarity with database security protocols including encryption and data masking.
  • Proficient in database monitoring tools (Foglight, or SQL Server Profiler).
  • Experienced in collaborating with data warehousing developers.
  • Knowledge of BI toolsets including SSIS, SSRS, and MS SharePoint.
  • Experience with SQL Server database replication and external replication platforms.
  • Must be capable of working independently and collaboratively.
  • Great communication skills.
  • Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) or higher certificates on SQL Server.
  • Understanding of or experience supporting .NET applications connectivity to SQL Servers.
