About The Position

Optum Tech is a global leader in health care innovation. Our teams develop cutting-edge solutions that help people live healthier lives and help make the health system work better for everyone. From advanced data analytics and AI to cybersecurity, we use innovative approaches to solve some of health care’s most complex challenges. Your contributions here have the potential to change lives. Ready to build the next breakthrough? Join us to start Caring. Connecting. Growing together. Position in this function design, build, and operate partner-facing REST/JSON and event-driven APIs, owning delivery from requirements through release. Drive high-priority UHC initiatives by collaborating with product, architecture, and downstream consumer teams to deliver on time and with high quality. Establish and enforce API standards and governance (contracts, versioning, documentation) while ensuring services meet reliability, scalability, performance, and security/compliance requirements. Improve engineering excellence through automated testing, CI/CD and deployment safety, observability, production support/on-call participation, and technical leadership/mentoring. You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production services
  • Solid hands-on expertise with C#/.NET (ASP.NET Core) building backend services and APIs in a microservices/service-oriented environment
  • Proven experience designing, building, and supporting REST/JSON APIs (OpenAPI/Swagger), including contract-first design, versioning/backward compatibility, idempotency, and consistent error handling
  • Solid engineering fundamentals (data structures, distributed systems concepts, concurrency, resiliency, performance tuning)
  • Demonstrated production ownership: incident response, root cause analysis, postmortems, and continuous improvement
  • Demonstrated solid communication and collaboration skills across product, architecture, and global engineering teams

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with API management/gateway tools (e.g., Azure API Management, Apigee, Kong, Mulesoft)
  • Event-driven systems experience (Kafka, Azure Service Bus, SNS/SQS, RabbitMQ)
  • Experience leading technical design efforts, mentoring engineers, and driving engineering standards
  • Background in payments, healthcare integrations, or other regulated, high-availability environments
  • Observability experience: structured logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards/alerting; production readiness and operational runbooks
  • Security-minded development experience (OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, mTLS, secrets management, secure coding practices)
  • Experience with automated testing (unit/integration/contract), code quality practices, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience supporting external partner integrations and production SLAs; solid troubleshooting skills across client/server integrations

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and deliver partner-facing REST/JSON and event-driven APIs from requirements through production release
  • Translate business requirements into technical designs; lead design reviews and align with architecture standards
  • Drive execution of high-priority UHC initiatives by coordinating with product, architecture, and downstream consumer teams
  • Define and enforce API contract standards (versioning, backward compatibility, error handling, documentation) across the Partner API portfolio
  • Engineer secure, reliable, and performant services (authN/authZ, encryption, secrets management, input validation, resiliency, capacity planning)
  • Build and maintain automated test coverage (unit, integration, contract, regression) and strengthen quality gates to reduce defects
  • Enhance CI/CD pipelines and deployment safety practices (feature flags, canary/blue-green, rollback) to enable faster, safer releases
  • Implement observability (logging, metrics, tracing), create dashboards/alerts, and maintain runbooks for production readiness
  • Participate in on-call support and incident response on a rotation approximately every 4–6 weeks, including triage, mitigation, and post-incident actions
  • Support partner onboarding and troubleshooting by diagnosing integration issues and collaborating with internal/external stakeholders to resolve them
  • Provide technical leadership through code/design reviews, mentoring, and continuous improvement of engineering practices and standards

Benefits

  • a comprehensive benefits package
