Position Summary: We are looking for a talented hands-on contributor with experience in materials characterization and microscopy to be responsible for operating a scanning electron microscope for cutting edge 3D graphene and other carbon allotrope characterization.

Requirements

  • A BS degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or a closely related field plus 5 years of experience in analytical/microscopy/metrology lab.
  • 3 years of hands-on experience in SEM imaging and chemical analysis by Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS)
  • 3 years of experience in sample preparation for electron microscopy
  • 3 years of experience characterizing materials, processing images, and analyzing data.
  • 2 years of experience maintaining instruments and/or process equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and ability to collaborate on cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and time management skills with ability to independently set priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of carbon allotropes (e.g., graphene, CNTs, carbon black) and exposure to a manufacturing or industrial environment is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with electron microscopy techniques, including Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Focused Ion Beam–Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB-SEM).
  • Demonstrated experience in electron microscopy sample preparation, such as microtomy sectioning, mounting, grinding and polishing, sputter coating, powder dispersion, and drop casting.
  • Strong curiosity and willingness to learn new characterization and sample preparation techniques

Responsibilities

  • Work a Monday–Friday morning shift (7:00 am–3:30 pm).
  • Operate scanning electron microscope (SEM) as the primary responsibility.
  • Prepare samples and analyze materials from R&D and production teams.
  • Independently follow and select appropriate SOPs; initiate and document methods and process improvements.
  • Maintain the instrument, report any issues in a timely manner, contact and work with service providers to troubleshoot issues.
  • Process images, analyze data, and document findings detailing material quality, properties, and consistency.
  • Manage SEM sample workflow and prioritize requests to meet internal customer demand.
  • Communicate timelines for publication of data and/or any delays that may occur because of hardware or other issues.
  • Work on a cross-disciplinary team with an open mind to new ideas in a fast-paced startup company.
  • Generate reports and effectively communicate results and conclusions to team members and stakeholders.
  • Handle hazardous materials using glove box and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Identify areas for improvement, design and conduct continuous improvement projects and method development projects.
  • Keep the working environment safe, clean, and well organized.
  • Assist in managing consumables inventory.
