About The Position

UFG is currently hiring for a Sr. Risk Control Technical Consultant who will serve as a trusted advisor and subject-matter expert, delivering high-impact risk control services that align with UFG’s SPIRIT values. This role conducts both on-site and virtual risk assessments of insured premises and operations to identify, evaluate and provide recommendations for control of exposures related to property, workers’ compensation, automobile, and general liability coverages. The position will provide actionable insights into line of business impacts from emerging exposures, loss trend analysis, industry analytics and technical insights for underwriting partners, agents, and policyholders. The Senior Risk Control Technical Consultant drives measurable value by delivering loss reduction strategies, completion of risk assessments, service account management, as well as value-added services that directly support account acquisition, retention, and service aligned with insurability interests. This role also acts as a mentor and subject matter expert, supporting ongoing training, and the advancement of UFG’s consultative risk control model. The ideal candidate for this role will be located in the Chicago, Illinois territory.

Requirements

  • 4-year college degree required or equivalent field experience
  • 10+ years risk control insurance and/or private industry experience
  • Advanced understanding of commercial lines of coverage and industry products.
  • Expert-level knowledge of regulatory standards and codes (OSHA, NFPA, DOT, local building codes).
  • Strong understanding of underwriting principles and risk selection.
  • Specialized industry expertise including construction, manufacturing, fleet management, and property risk.
  • Knowledge of enterprise risk management and loss prevention strategies.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and enterprise systems
  • Strong consulting and investigative capabilities
  • Ability to curate, synthesize, and communicate complex risk information into actionable insights
  • Demonstrated mentoring, coaching, and training delivery skills
  • Strong organizational, relationship-building, and communication skills
  • High level of business acumen supporting revenue growth, account retention, and loss reduction
  • Commitment to innovation, continuous improvement, critical thinking, and service excellence
  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Degree in Occupational Safety, Engineering, Business or related field desired
  • Completion of industry designation(s) or certificate(s) such as ARM, CSP, CHST, CRIS, MRIS desired

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for complex or high-hazard accounts across multiple industries.
  • Conduct advanced risk assessments and exposure analyses for property, workers’ compensation, general liability, auto, and specialty lines.
  • Interpret and apply technical standards and best practices (OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, DOT, FM Global, etc.).
  • Develop tailored, technically sound Risk Control recommendations that balance risk reduction with operational feasibility.
  • Partner closely with underwriting to support new business, renewals, and challenged accounts.
  • Provide technical opinions on risk acceptability, pricing considerations, and coverage implications.
  • Participate in account strategy discussions, large account reviews, and risk selection decisions.
  • Assist with post-loss analysis and development of corrective action strategies.
  • Produce high-quality, technically accurate risk control reports with clear executive-level summaries.
  • Ensure consistency and clarity of recommendations and findings.
  • Continuously improve report quality standards and technical guidance materials.
  • Mentor and coach risk control consultants on technical topics, assessment techniques, and report quality.
  • Lead or contribute to training sessions, technical roundtables, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex technical questions from field staff.
  • Identify trends in losses, exposures, and regulatory changes to proactively address emerging risks.
  • Contribute to development of tools, templates, and best practices that enhance efficiency and quality.
  • Support organizational goals related to quality, growth, and consistency in risk control services.
  • Communicate complex risk issues clearly to clients, brokers, and internal partners.
  • Build credibility and trust through professional expertise and consultative approach.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of risk control reports, itineraries, and expense documentation.
  • Support client retention and growth by demonstrating value-added risk management services.
