About The Position

Amazon LEO is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world. As a PIT RF Engineer, you will be responsible for the development of various electronic hardware test set-ups in the Payload Integration and Test lab as well as in the field. You will work closely with engineering teams in the specification/design of these test set-ups and the build/procurement of test equipment for Amazon LEO prototype payload hardware. This is very much a hands-on role, and a successful candidate will have extensive experience in supporting the full development cycles of RF, communications, and space hardware through development, prototyping, and qualification procedures. You must be responsive, flexible, and able to succeed within a collaborative and fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • 7+ years of RF, satellite, aerospace, or related industry experience.
  • 7+ years in RF design and/or verification with launched products.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with on-orbit payload verification or satellite testing.
  • Experience with current and upcoming RF standards in cellular (4G/5G), OFDM/WiMAX, 802.11ad, microwave backhaul, DVB-S2 / DVB-C, OR similar broadband wireless standards.
  • Experience with communications theory and RF systems: OFDM, MIMO, free-space optics, polarization, spread spectrum, matching, S-parameters, losses, coherence, etc.
  • Understanding of the challenges associated with low-Earth-orbit satellite communications: frequency bands, regulatory, earth stations, path loss, power spectral density, power flux density, etc.
  • Experience in wireless (satellite and/or terrestrial) system design and/or system integration, RF system analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Working from schematics, diagrams, written and verbal descriptions, layouts, or defined plans to build out bench-top and rack-mounted test set-ups.
  • Building and modifying custom test harnesses, breadboards, and test fixtures in support of payload hardware tests.
  • Performing operational tests, system check-outs, and fault isolation on test set-ups, systems, and equipment.
  • Assisting in the development of lab processes, equipment scheduling, and work tracking.
  • Implementing, validating, and optimizing RF lab set-ups composed of antenna, measurement equipment, and prototype equipment.
  • Configuring test equipment for automated operation: satellite link emulator, spectrum analyzer, signal generator, etc.
  • Working with engineering teams to specify and procure a range of capital equipment to meet program development requirements – including signal generators, spectrum analyzers, channel emulators, network loading, and computing equipment.
  • Meeting with suppliers to select enabling lab technologies.
  • Keeping equipment in working order, and maintaining all service and calibration records.
  • Establishing lab layouts and facility utilities requirements (power, thermal loads, LN2, GN2).
  • Maintaining a safe operating environment, and ensuring the lab is in compliance with OSHA, ESD, Safety, etc.

Benefits
