About The Position

The ideal candidate will be a member of the Corporate Engineering Team located in either Houston, TX or Denver, CO. The Corporate Engineering team is responsible for managing and reporting SM Energy’s reserves to internal and external parties. This position will be responsible for coordinating the quarterly reserves processes and collaborating with internal and external auditors as well as accounting and business unit groups to ensure the company’s reserves are in compliance with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reporting guidelines. Corporate Engineering Team presents quarterly results to SM’s Executives and Board of Directors.

Requirements

  • Experience with development of unconventional resource plays.
  • Command of fundamental reservoir engineering disciplines including decline curve analysis (DCA), rate transient analysis (RTA), volumetrics, recoveries, fluid behavior, simple analytical history matching, and flow regime identification.
  • Proficient and strong understanding of Pressure-Temperatures phase diagrams for practical purposes.
  • Proficient and strong understanding of probabilistic and deterministic methods.
  • Can easily identify limitations in data set and range in certainty of results.
  • Familiar with core analysis and petro-physical evaluations.
  • Proficient and strong knowledge/experience relating to relating to geochemistry, operations, geological interpretation, well data integration, petrophysics and seismic attributes.
  • B.S. degree in Engineering is required
  • 6 years of petroleum engineering experience

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate oil and gas reserves for entire company throughout the year.
  • Communicate with asset teams routinely to understand their oil and gas reserves.
  • Prepare and give presentations to management including Executives.
  • Prepare Reserves Reports and presentations for semi-annual Borrowing Base determinations.
  • Mentor and train compass, rotational employees, and interns.
  • Develop correlations between geological and completion variables and well performance.
  • Initiate reservoir studies of existing assets to determine completion and spacing improvements.
  • Incorporates advanced production analysis into workflow for well evaluation and forecasting purposes.
  • Ability to analytically model production data when required.
  • Conduct peer review of booking strategies with asset teams.
  • Analyze the company with a holistic tool kit including rate or pressure transient analysis, volumetrics, analytical or numerical modeling and decline curve analysis.
  • Provide estimations of resource volumes and recoverable hydrocarbons using both probabilistic and deterministic volumetrics, EURs and recovery factors.
  • Conduct business with the highest ethical standards; demonstrate decision-making skills that ensure the safety of all persons associated with SM facilities.
