The Senior Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse who sets the standard for high-quality care and leads by example. This role carries responsibility, authority, and accountability for managing patient care through sound clinical judgment, communication, and teamwork. The nurse fosters collaborative relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to ensure optimal outcomes across the continuum of care. As a leader and mentor, the Senior Professional Staff Nurse demonstrates a strong commitment to both the community and the nursing profession.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years' experience.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by the assigned unit.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
  • Ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs.
  • Annual completion of 1 professional contribution selected from department, hospital or system goals, and approved by Unit Director.
  • Certification not required if Master's in nursing or DNP is held.
  • If a BSN is held, a Master's degree in a related field may be substituted in lieu of Certification.
  • Must obtain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on a Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation to be promoted to this level.
  • Must maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on annual performance evaluation to maintain status.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity.
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.

Responsibilities

  • Applies adult learning principles to educate patients, families, students, and new staff, supporting smooth transitions in care and fostering open communication.
  • Uses the nursing process within Relationship-Based Care to develop holistic, patient-centered care plans, demonstrating critical thinking and clear communication across care teams.
  • Builds and maintains positive, culturally aware relationships with patients, families, and colleagues, modeling work-life balance, safety, and accountability.
  • Engages in quality improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities, applying evidence-based practices, and enhancing patient satisfaction.
  • Commits to ongoing professional development, actively participates in shared governance, supports team collaboration, and adapts to change to improve care and practice environments.
