The Hardware Engineering Team provides engineering design & development services to a wide range of products within Raytheon. The Critical Item Production Readiness (CPR) department is dedicated to ensuring that every product we develop is designed with its entire production lifecycle in mind. By integrating principles of manufacturability, assembly, scalability, and cost management, we aim to achieve production excellence while meeting the highest standards of quality and reliability. The Accelerated Learning & Rapid Prototyping Section is seeking a Senior Principal Additive Manufacturing (AM) Design and Process Engineer. The candidate will interface and collaborate with engineers from all disciplines and functions to develop the strategy to rapidly mature the technology and manufacturing readiness of AM. You will be responsible for research, development and insertion of additive manufacturing capabilities, tools, processes and technology into Raytheon’s products. This is a remote based position.

Requirements

  • Bachelors in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM), and 10 years professional engineering experience, or an advanced degree with 7 years of professional engineering experience
  • Experience in Design and Process Development for Additive Manufacturing including metal Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) and Directed Energy Deposition (DED) processes, capabilities and systems
  • Experience with topology optimization tools
  • Working knowledge of machining, casting, and forming/molding of metals and polymers and thorough understanding with the implementation of “near net shape” technologies like investment, sand and die casting processes, forging process for ferrous and non-ferrous materials
  • Experience in the application of GD&T principles (ASME Y14.5)
  • Experience with CAD modeling (CREO preferred)
  • Experience interfacing across the mechanical discipline (A&T, MP&P, etc.)
  • Experience generating and releasing supplier management requirements and statements of work (SSOWs)
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

  • Work independently to develop and execute a robust engineering development plan.
  • Working knowledge of fabrication processes, producibility enhancements, and inspection and validation methods
  • Working knowledge of inspection planning, inspection methods and dimensional data analysis

  • Background in Design for Additive Manufacturing (DFAM)
  • Background in Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA)
  • Willingness to travel domestically

Responsibilities

  • Co-develop, support and drive Raytheon AM technology roadmap
  • Work with programs early in development to assess the feasibility of AM implementation including design and cost considerations.
  • Support multiple programs at a time to facilitate development, fabrication and qualification of AM hardware.
  • Capture and execute Contracted Research and Development (CRAD) and Internal Research and Development (IRAD) to mature AM technology and manufacturing readiness to meet Raytheon’s customer needs
  • Work with Quality, Operations and Supply Chain teams to establish a robust network of AM sources.
  • Up to 25% domestic travel may be required.
  • Facilitate the creation of Technical Data Packages that effectively convey design intent as well as functional and quality requirements.
  • Lead process development activity to improve print capability, increase speed, reduce cost and enhance material performance in support of Raytheon’s key applications
  • Mature Raytheon’s design for AM capability, including evaluation of available CAD tools and implementation of topology optimization workflows.
  • Train and mentor other design engineers on basic principles of DFAM as well as specific considerations for Raytheon product families.
  • Collaborate with government, industry, academic, and RTX Business Unit partners to develop whitepapers, project concepts, and responsive proposals.
