About The Position

GDC IT Solutions is currently seeking an Senior PostgreSQL Database Administrator for a one day a week Hybrid opportunity in Harrisburg. As an Senior PostgreSQL Database Administrator plays a critical role in modern IT organizations that rely on PostgreSQL as their primary database management system. This position leads the design, implementation, maintenance and support of database environments. This role includes the development and design of database strategies, monitoring and improving database performance and capacity, and planning for future expansion requirements for the most complex projects, working independently. This position requires the necessary skills to coordinate and support other database administrators as senior database administrators are expected to mentor, coach, and train less senior team members.

Requirements

  • Extensive hands-on experience administering PostgreSQL databases in enterprise environments.
  • Strong expertise in PostgreSQL architecture, performance tuning, high availability, load balancing, and replication.
  • Proven experience managing PostgreSQL in AWS environments, including RDS, Aurora PostgreSQL, EC2, and S3.
  • Advanced experience with database backup, restore, disaster recovery, and data protection strategies.
  • Strong automation and scripting skills using Unix shell scripting, Windows PowerShell, Python, and Ansible.
  • Experience deploying and managing databases using infrastructure-as-code and containerization tools.
  • Deep understanding of database security principles, access controls, encryption, and authentication mechanisms.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to analyze performance metrics and resolve complex database issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while leading initiatives and supporting team members.

Nice To Haves

  • Database administration experience with SQL Server, MongoDB, and/or LUW DB2.
  • Familiarity with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Windows Server operating systems.
  • Experience using Jira for task tracking and collaboration.
  • Knowledge of ITIL service management and change management processes.
  • Experience with Grafana dashboards and visualization.
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Nagios, Zabbix, Prometheus, and Grafana.
  • Basic project management experience, including creating and maintaining project plans.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, architecture, implementation, maintenance, and support of PostgreSQL database environments for complex and large-scale projects.
  • Design and maintain high-availability, scalable, and secure PostgreSQL architectures across AWS (Aurora/RDS) and on-premises environments.
  • Monitor, analyze, and optimize database performance, including query tuning, index optimization, memory configuration, and bottleneck resolution.
  • Manage database backup, recovery, replication, disaster recovery planning, and annual disaster preparedness testing.
  • Deploy and maintain PostgreSQL databases using containerization and automation tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Rancher, and Kubernetes.
  • Implement and manage database security controls, including access management, encryption, authentication (LDAP), and compliance best practices.
  • Automate database operations including backups, monitoring, patching, and alerting using shell scripting, PowerShell, Python, Ansible, and Stone Branch.
  • Perform installation, upgrades, patching, and configuration of PostgreSQL database systems.
  • Design database schemas, tables, indexes, and objects to support application data requirements and business logic.
  • Configure and manage monitoring, reporting, and alerting systems to proactively detect and resolve issues.
  • Support ETL processes, data exports, data loads, and transformations.
  • Mentor, coach, and provide technical guidance to junior database administrators.
  • Collaborate with application teams, infrastructure teams, and stakeholders to support database-related initiatives.
  • Participate in project planning, execution, and documentation while following established project management practices.
