About The Position

We are seeking a Sr. Packaging Engineer to join our dynamic team at Petmate. This role is responsible for leading the development and optimization of packaging solutions for both new and existing products. This person plays a critical part in ensuring packaging meets functional, aesthetic, sustainability, and cost requirements while supporting product launches and ongoing operations. The Packaging Engineer will collaborate cross-functionally with Product Development, Manufacturing, Quality, Procurement, and external suppliers to deliver innovative and cost-effective packaging solutions.

Requirements

  • Deep understanding of packaging materials (plastics, paperboard, corrugate, foils, etc.).
  • Knowledge of packaging design, prototyping, and testing methodologies.
  • Familiarity with packaging machinery and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to lead packaging development projects from concept to commercialization.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams and external suppliers.
  • Experience in identifying cost-saving opportunities through design, material, or process changes.
  • Ability to conduct cost-benefit analyses and present recommendations.
  • Experience resolving packaging-related quality issues.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, ISO, ASTM) and sustainability standards.
  • CAD tools (e.g., ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Microsoft Office
  • ERP systems (e.g., Oracle) and specification management tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with internal teams (R&D, Manufacturing, Procurement, Quality) and external partners.
  • Strong knowledge of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, and testing protocols.
  • Proven track record of delivering cost savings and resolving packaging quality issues.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in retail packaging engineering, preferably in consumer goods, food, or toys.

Responsibilities

  • Design, test, and implement packaging for new products, ensuring alignment with product requirements, brand standards, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Identify and execute cost-saving initiatives on existing packaging through material changes, design improvements, and supplier negotiations.
  • Investigate and resolve packaging-related quality issues, working closely with Quality Assurance and Manufacturing teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Support corporate sustainability goals by evaluating and recommending eco-friendly packaging alternatives.
  • Work with external packaging suppliers to source materials, develop prototypes, and ensure timely delivery of packaging components.
  • Maintain accurate packaging specifications and ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and regulations.
  • Lead packaging-related projects from concept through commercialization, managing timelines, budgets, and cross-functional communication.
