About The Position

The University of Miami’s UMIT Department has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Sr. Network Engineer to work in a hybrid capacity based in Coral Gables, Florida. The Senior Network Engineer evaluates system networking needs and recommends improvements and modifications to existing infrastructure. The incumbent also maintains the design and integrity of the University’s internal network, including customer-facing hosted and cloud environments. Moreover, an employee in this position provides expert technical assistance to team members with high-level system and networking requests.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and assists the installation, upgrade, and support of assigned network hardware, operating systems, and software.
  • Provides subject matter expertise to maintain the appropriate lifecycle for the technologies within scope.
  • Provides quality assurance for engineering designs of junior team members.
  • Analyses system performance, modifies parameters to improve output, and effectively utilizes system resources.
  • Installs and manages network communication equipment according to written and graphic specifications.
  • Performs moderately complex configuration and maintenance of multi-protocols enterprise network equipment supporting University data and optical network.
  • Coordinates implementation and testing of changes to the network hardware, circuits, and software.
  • Designs, implements, and maintains voice over IP solutions.
  • Configures and troubleshoots data network routers and switches.
  • Utilizes test equipment and network management components in the analysis and correction of technical problems.
  • Performs first line problem resolution for network hardware and services.
  • Assists in maintaining documentation of hardware and software.
  • Monitors network performance levels and ensures network availability is maintained.
  • Provides primary support for hardware used on the local area network, metropolitan area network (TLS), and wide area network.
  • Responds to questions regarding problems related to network services.
  • Provides guidance and direction to customers.
  • Identifies and diagnoses moderately complex problems and factors affecting network performance.
  • Alerts supervisor or experienced technicians of network failures or degradation and performs corrective action.
  • Monitors network performance using available software tools and monitoring hardware.
  • Maintains network support databases.
  • Submits documentation on the diagnosis and correction of troubles.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Devise, plan, deploy, and improve wireless networks from the beginning to implementation by collaborating with vendors, managers, and network engineers.
  • Understand client requirements to be able to cater to their appropriate needs.
  • Responsible for administering and maintaining communication infrastructure, including network connectivity, internet access, DNS, DHCP, LAN/WAN, VLANs, routing protocols, sub-netting, TCP/IP, OSPF, and QoS
  • Responsible for installing, maintaining, and supporting LAN, WAN and VoIP infrastructure.
  • Provide high-level technical support for voice, video, and data network systems.
  • Maintain network documentation, and hardware and software standards.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves complex problems encountered in network, server/virtual server environment; communicates the technique and resolution to Technical Infrastructure team.
  • Analyze and resolve network hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate fashion and provide training to colleagues where required.
  • Oversee and participate in the installation, monitoring, maintenance, support, and optimization of all network hardware, software, and communication links.
  • Evaluates network needs and recommends improvements and modifications to existing infrastructure.
  • Supervises and assists with the installation, upgrades and support of assigned network hardware, operating systems, and software for external customers.
  • Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.
  • Monitor and test network performance and provide network performance statistics and reports.
  • Participate in managing all network security solutions.
  • Handhold other in-house engineers to train them on wireless technologies, besides guiding other non-technical people.
  • Provide guidance to (junior) members of the team.
  • Provides subject matter expertise to maintain the appropriate lifecycle for the technologies in scope including technology, risk, refresh, migration, and retirement.
  • Provides support for critical network services 24x7x365 using the tools and resources available within the department.
  • Is on-call to troubleshoot and resolve reported network problems, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Submits documentation on diagnosis and correction of troubles.
  • Reports issues that occur during shift to leadership quickly and accurately
