About The Position

Reporting to the Program Supervisor, this position is responsible for overall care of residential clients at Hiawatha Hall, an Intensive Residential Treatment Services facility for adults with sub-acute mental health symptoms. Practitioners assure that clients receive appropriate support and interventions, in accordance with best practice and regulations, and that services are coordinated to allow for success and continued recovery upon discharge. This position typically starts at the mid wage range which can vary based on education and experience.

Requirements

  • An individual who is qualified in at least one of the ways described in paragraph (b) to (d) may serve as a mental health practitioner.
  • (b) An individual is qualified as a mental health practitioner through relevant coursework if the individual completes at least 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in behavioral sciences or related fields and: (1) has at least 2,000 hours of experience providing services to individuals with: (i) a mental illness or a substance use disorder; or (ii) a traumatic brain injury or a developmental disability, and completes the additional training described in section 245I.05, subdivision 3, paragraph (c), before providing direct contact services to a client; (2) is fluent in the non-English language of the ethnic group to which at least 50 percent of the individual's clients belong, and completes the additional training described in section 245I.05, subdivision 3, paragraph (c), before providing direct contact services to a client; (3) is working in a day treatment program under section 256B.0671, subdivision 3, or 256B.0943; or (4) has completed a practicum or internship that (i) required direct interaction with adult clients or child clients, and (ii) was focused on behavioral sciences or related fields.
  • (c) An individual is qualified as a mental health practitioner through work experience if the individual: (1) has at least 4,000 hours of experience in the delivery of services to individuals with: (i) a mental illness or a substance use disorder; or (ii) a traumatic brain injury or a developmental disability, and completes the additional training described in section 245I.05, subdivision 3, paragraph (c), before providing direct contact services to clients; or (2) receives treatment supervision at least once per week until meeting the requirement in clause (1) of 4,000 hours of experience and has at least 2,000 hours of experience providing services to individuals with: (i) a mental illness or a substance use disorder; or (ii) a traumatic brain injury or a developmental disability, and completes the additional training described in section 245I.05, subdivision 3, paragraph (c), before providing direct contact services to clients.
  • (d) An individual is qualified as a mental health practitioner if the individual has a master's or other graduate degree in behavioral sciences or related fields.
  • Strong verbal communication skills required
  • Strong ability to work with and relate to adults with serious mental illness
  • Excellent ability to manage emotional and behavioral issues with mentally ill clients
  • Strong organizational skills required
  • Proficient at personal computer standard applications (Word, Excel, E-mail, etc.)
  • Use of fax and photocopy machine.

Responsibilities

  • Case Management: This day time position is responsible for a variety of case management duties with clients that must be completed within required timeframes. A sample of duties includes functional assessments, treatment plans, abuse prevention plans, discharge summaries, coordinate and assist with discharge, including all required documentation; coordinate daily care (appointments, team meetings, etc.); assist client with MA and other eligibility paperwork as needed, including applying for MA extensions; coordinate with outside stakeholders (county case managers, referral sources, etc.) in a professional, courteous manner that builds relationships and supports the quality and reputation of FCC.
  • Daily Client Care: Provide structure, support and daily organization to residents; conduct therapeutic client encounters daily; manage client emotional and behavioral issues using a variety of techniques including but not limited to crisis intervention and de- escalation; assist clients in learning independent living skills; follow and enforce house schedule and all house rules; conduct hourly checks; serve as role model and mentor to new staff; provide client transportation as needed; participate in scheduled floor time; participate in level assessments; participate in the “on call” schedule; conduct IMR or other groups as directed by Treatment Director and Clinical Supervisor in accordance with schedule and curriculum; complete daily logs and encounter notes; dispense medications in accordance with legal requirements and house rules. In absence of RN, fill medication minders, order refills and provide medication education to clients as needed. Staff must remain awake during all work hours.
  • Client Intake: Conducting new client intake will sometimes be required as part of this position. These duties include completion of all necessary paperwork and steps included in the intake packet in a timely fashion (ex: release forms, client rights, house rules, resident orientation, tours, introductions, photos, etc.).
  • General Team Member Duties: Attend scheduled staff meetings and trainings as required; document therapeutic encounters as required; record client progress toward goal completion in client chart; participate as a member of the treatment team; participate in the development of house policies and procedures in conjunction with management; participate in supervision of mental health rehab workers.
