About The Position

The University of Rochester is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to provide engineering solutions for complex technical problems within the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE). The role involves performing precise calibrations, maintenance on measuring equipment, and developing designs for mechanical parts and assemblies. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in design engineering, particularly in machine component design and experience with complex mechanical systems.

Requirements

• AS or AAS or equivalent with 7+ years industry experience.
• Proficient with CAD software, Siemens NX preferred.

Nice To Haves

• In-depth knowledge of machine component design and materials.
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes.
• Experience with opto-mechanics, precision mechanics, tool and fixture design, high vacuum systems, and precision metrology.

Responsibilities

• Perform precise calibrations and preventive and corrective maintenance on measuring and test equipment, instruments, tools, gauges, and fixtures.
• Set up test equipment and conduct tests on performance and reliability of mechanical, structural, or electromechanical equipment.
• Develop calibration operating procedures and documentation for all instruments.
• Select and procure instrument spare parts to minimize machine downtime.
• Coordinate calibration with outside contractors for equipment that cannot be maintained internally.
• Train new team members and provide input to employee performance evaluations.
• Develop conceptual and detailed designs of mechanical parts and assemblies based on project requirements.
• Provide supporting safety and engineering analyses as required.
• Prepare materials for engineering design reviews.
• Prepare technical drawings in compliance with industry standards.
• Work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
