The Opportunity This position works out of our San Diego, CA (Near UHC) location in the Infectious Disease Division of our Abbott Rapid Diagnostics Business Unit. This role is on site 5 days a week, with around 10% travel including international travel. What You’ll Work On The person hired in this role will be an established and productive mechanical engineer who contributes to new and existing products, processes, prototypes, fixtures, and tool designs. Works independently with minimal supervision on larger, moderately complex projects/assignments and executes compliantly, efficiently, on-time, and within budget to meet company objectives. May apply advanced mechanical engineering principles and tools to the evaluation and solution of complex technical problems in support of business strategies. Supports continuous quality improvement and may serve as the technical lead for subsystem projects. Provides training to other engineers. In addition: Leads the development of mechanical designs for new and existing subsystems in accordance with applicable procedures and medical regulatory standards, performs analysis on design concepts, and tests theories to reduce risks. Demonstrated success in utilizing empirical, numerical and experimental analysis to analyze designs. Designs, develops and specifies new hardware features or improves existing hardware features. Demonstrated success in the ability to specify, design, verify, and validate appropriate materials, components, processes and technologies for subsystems. Uses understanding of processes used in design and manufacturing to develop and execute subsystems for new medical devices, processes, equipment, materials, verification, and validation. Applies tolerance stack analysis and DFM principles to deliver robust mechanical designs Select and develop test methods and simulation models to mitigate design risks and ensure new design reliability. Develops and selects appropriate test methods for engineering design checkout and verification for subsystem. Executes new devices, processes, equipment, materials, verification and validation. Implement approved Design Control procedures for development in accordance with FDA guidelines. Applies theoretical principles, evaluation, ingenuity and creative / analytical techniques for assessment of sub-system designs. Uses root cause analysis (RCA) tools and techniques to troubleshoot sub-system designs. Provides written technical justifications and rationale for sub-system designs. Provides input into risk management documentation including dFMEA, pFMEA and risk analyses. Identifies and mitigates sub-system design risks. Use knowledge of engineering and cross-functional tasks and establishes task timing and duration. Leads project discussions and sets project direction across multiple cross-functional teams. This role is on site daily. International Travel of up to 10% is required for this role. This role will be possibly exposed to industrial chemicals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or closely related STEM field
  • Minimum 8 years of experience.
