About The Position

As a Sr. Mechanical Engineer, Hybrid Powertrain at Carbon Robotics, you will play a key role in developing the mechanical systems that enable our diesel-electric platform. You will immediately bring your significant experience integrating powertrain systems into vehicles and developing supporting systems such as gearboxes, generators, cooling systems, fuel management systems, and drivetrain components to revolutionize agricultural traction systems.

Requirements

  • 8-15 years experience designing automotive or heavy equipment powertrains, preferably with electric or hybrid systems.
  • High proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks) and FEA (ANSYS) tools for structural, thermal, and vibration analysis.
  • Extensive experience with rotating machinery design including shaft dynamics, bearing selection, and gear design.
  • Solid background in thermal management including liquid cooling systems, heat exchangers, and thermal interface materials.
  • Experience designing and integrating cast, machined, and fabricated housings for high-precision rotating equipment.
  • Knowledge of automotive/agricultural durability requirements and validation testing procedures.
  • Familiarity with electric motor characteristics, efficiency maps, and integration requirements.
  • Experience with sealing systems for high-speed shafts and contamination prevention in agricultural environments.
  • Willingness to travel ~10% of the time to support products in the production & field environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Highly desired to have past experience as a Responsible Engineer or IPT lead.
  • BS+ in Mechanical Engineering with focus on machine design, automotive engineering, or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Define and select core off the shelf and semi-custom components of the diesel electric powertrain including diesel engine, generator, ECUs, start/standby batteries, and more.
  • Design/integrate complete diesel electric drivetrain systems including motor housings, gearboxes, and axle assemblies for high-torque agricultural applications.
  • Architect thermal management solutions for motors, inverters, and battery systems operating in extreme agricultural environments.
  • Develop mounting structures and vibration isolation systems for diesel and electric motors ranging including traction drives to auxiliary pumps.
  • Design/integrate power transmission components including couplings, driveshafts, and reduction gearboxes for 100+ kW electric motors.
  • Analyze and optimize powertrain efficiency through gear ratio selection, bearing design, and lubrication systems.
  • Lead durability testing including shock/vibration, thermal cycling, and accelerated life testing of drivetrain components.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers on motor integration, cable routing, and high-voltage safety enclosures.
