About The Position
The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer for New Programs at Tesla plays a crucial role in the early stages of product design and development. This position is situated within the New Programs Engineering team, which is responsible for studying, simulating, building, and validating Tesla's future vehicle concepts. The engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional partners from various departments, including Design, Vehicle Engineering, and Powertrain Engineering, to create 3D designs, prototypes, and demonstrators that inform downstream engineering efforts. This role emphasizes product design expertise and a fundamental first principles approach to problem-solving, rather than requiring extensive experience in the automotive industry. In this position, the engineer will be responsible for documenting the product plan of record, identifying risks, and making key decisions based on data, feedback, and customer input. They will own vehicle system-level attributes during the initial stages of product definition and present trade-offs to leadership in collaboration with partner teams. The role also involves facilitating product decisions through in-depth analysis of customer use cases, market research, and other relevant data. Additionally, the engineer will support designers and modelers in defining manufacturing strategies and ensuring that 3D surfaces are suitable for mass manufacturing and regulatory compliance. They will engage in brainstorming sessions with engineers, designers, and users to develop innovative solutions for automotive applications, utilizing CAD to create and refine designs over time. This position requires a proactive approach to managing multiple priorities, organizing workloads, and meeting tight deadlines while effectively communicating progress to leadership.
