About the position

The position involves collaborating with Tooling Design, Simulation Engineers, and Process Engineering to manufacture high-pressure die casting tooling for Tesla's innovative electric vehicles. The role focuses on developing CAD designs and improvements for die cast tooling, including aspects such as split lines, slides, ejection, vent, and cooling systems. The candidate will design custom dies, fixtures, and tools, providing models and drawings for fabrication. Additionally, the role requires providing feedback to Tooling Design and Casting Engineers to balance tooling performance and manufacturability, evaluating failures, and innovating new ideas to enhance performance metrics like cycle time and yield.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the CAD design and improvements of die cast tooling, including split lines, slides, ejection, vent and cooling system.
  • Design custom dies, fixtures, jigs, tools, etc. as needed, and provide models/drawings for fabrication.
  • Provide feedback to Tooling Design and Casting Engineers to achieve the right balance between tooling performance and manufacturability.
  • Evaluate failures and provide technical solutions to improve quality and/or OEE in the specified area.
  • Capture feedback from Casting Process Engineers into new and replacement dies.
  • Innovate new ideas to push the envelope of performance (cycle time, yield, uptime) and minimize risk.
  • Design and implement die designs and modifications to continuously improve die performance.
  • Assist in the development of tooling design and fabrication schedules, then execute accordingly.
  • Provide technical oversight of tooling suppliers.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, including outsourced work and vendors.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant mechanical design experience.
  • Experience with aluminum HPDC tooling, but other relevant tooling or mechanical design experience can be considered.
  • Strong to expert level 3D CAD skills, including advanced surfacing and large assemblies.
  • CATIA V5+ fluency preferred; if no CATIA experience, must be able to learn and adopt it quickly.
  • Experience designing in 2D (AutoCAD) and/or 3D (Catia) environments.
  • Experience working in a Tool Shop producing new Casting dies, performing engineering changes and die repair work.
  • Demonstrated project management abilities.
