Superior Completion Services is currently seeking a Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer - Completion Tools for our office in Houston, TX . The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will drive innovation across our downhole lower‑completion and flow‑control product lines, leading the design, development, and qualification of next‑generation tools for oil and gas wells. You’ll own full‑cycle engineering, from concept and testing to documentation and sustaining support, while partnering with manufacturing and operations to solve complex challenges. This role is fast‑paced, hands‑on, and ideal for a self‑motivated engineer who enjoys mentoring others and managing high‑impact development projects. Summary: The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will work within the Research, Design, New Product Development, and Sustaining Engineering Group and support new product development in our Downhole - Lower Completion Tool - Flow Control product lines (including sand control tools, fluid loss valves, interval control valves (ICVs), barrier valves, intelligent completion tools, and accessories). In their role, they will be responsible for the design and qualification testing of new downhole completion tool products for oil and gas wells to meet applicable industry standards and customers’ requirements, as well as the maintenance of existing designs. The successful candidate will be highly self-motivated, able to work in a quick-paced environment, and will be responsible for: preparing and reviewing engineering documents for prototyping and production; providing support to the Design Engineering Group during prototype testing of equipment; providing technical support for manufacturing and operations; dispositioning nonconforming product; preparing design packs and other product documentation; and troubleshooting failed equipment or processes. The ideal candidate will provide mentorship, guidance, and direct supervision to junior design engineering personnel while managing larger development projects. The ideal candidate will also have design experience developing new downhole completion tools to meet industry standards such as API 11D1, API 19V, API 19 ICV, API 19AC, or similar specifications.

Requirements

  • TECHNICAL SKILLS Knowledge, competency, and experience in the practical application of mechanical engineering practices.

  • EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE A bachelor’s degree in engineering from a four-year college or university is required.
  • Additionally, a minimum of ten years of experience in the design of equipment (preferably in the oil and gas industry) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Uses learned Design Engineering principles to design and modify downhole completion tools and equipment.
  • Develop conceptual designs for new products from design specifications.
  • Design, direct, and/or review the construction of layouts of possible designs and make “best choice” recommendations.
  • Generate layouts and detailed engineering calculations for new and modified equipment designs.
  • Ensure that manufacturing drawings are consistent with the working layouts for product designs.
  • Lead the assembly and lab testing of prototypes for product qualification.
  • Draft documentation of new products.
  • Provide expert-level technical assistance to manufacturing, assembly, clients, and operational personnel.
  • Check/Review machine drawings and advise on manufacturability.
  • Initiate, check, and approve change notices.
  • Initiate test procedure, test request, and write test reports efficiently.
  • Disposition of rejected parts.
  • Create design pack documentation
  • Mentor, guide, and supervise the work of junior designers, engineers, and drafters.
  • Manage large research and product development projects from concept to product release.
  • Provide leadership and recommendations to the department’s Standard Operating Procedures, Work Instructions, operations, and product development.
