What is the role? Shell operates approximately 2,000 vessels daily, with the SAFE Team conducting around 75,000 vessel screenings each year. To manage risks effectively, around 25,000 OCIMF and CDI reports are reviewed and evaluated annually, including over 3,000 specifically for Shell. Additionally, about 100 management reviews (TMSA 3 audits) of third-party technical operators are performed each year. What you’ll be doing The incumbent will be responsible for understanding, managing, and implementing Transport Safety Standard, Maritime Safety Standards to support the group's shipping business requirements. This role requires familiarity with international legislation (e.g., MARPOL, SOLAS, ISM) and industry standards, codes, and guidelines (e.g., ISGOTT, ICS, IBC). Act as an accountable decision maker in the vetting process. Maintain clear accountability over safety and performance for assets. Leading Management Reviews (TMSA3 audits). Make decisions regarding the clearance process. Provide leadership support to others in the S&M India (Chennai) Office. Carry out SIRE 2.0 editorial reviews. Carry out SIRE 2.0 Inspections. Incident Responder Support for Emergency Response Team. Contract holder for vetting contracts. Long Term Time Charter Vessel and Technical Operator focal point support both Trading and JV partners in the vetting process. Act as focal point for companies on long term time charter business with Shell Lead projects based on business needs. Engage with stakeholders to balance risk and commercial value.

Requirements

  • The candidate must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis
  • Minimum of 5 years of sea time as an officer, or those who have served as Chief Officer with more than 2 years of shore-based experience, or a candidate that has other proven experience in the maritime field that meets the requirements of a Maritime Assurance Assessor
  • Current or previously held an STCW II/2 (Deck) CoC issued by a recognized flag
  • Solid understanding of relevant international standards, Classification Society rules, and regulations
  • Current or previous experience in maritime vetting and HSSE is strongly preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Having experience as a Master or Chief Officer on ocean-going tankers (LNG, LPG, Chemical, Crude, Products) is advantageous and is necessary for SIRE accreditation
