Learn more at https://www.jnj.com/medtech Position Summary: The Sr. Manager External Innovation engages with the external innovator network including early-stage companies, start-ups, universities, physicians and other individual innovators to identify emerging technologies and therapeutic trends and accesses critical technologies to enhance Johnson and Johnson Vision’s (JJV’s) product pipeline and capabilities in alignment with strategic objectives. The role partners closely with JJV’s R&D teams to identify and map current & future technology needs and collaborate to perform early proof-of concept (POC) and research studies to develop and establish product feasibility. This will also require a strong partnership with the legal/IP teams to facilitate the drafting and execution of research agreements. The role also partners with Business Development (BD), Commercial, Finance, Clinical and Regulatory Affairs teams amongst others to perform technology assessments and diligence activities in support of strategic initiatives. Utilizing your project management skills, the role will also involve monitoring the product development goals of existing investments and collaborations. The Sr. Manager External Innovation Technology will also be responsible for mapping and landscaping of emerging technologies and strategic asset categories in Eye health, highlighting development trends and making recommendations on opportunities for further evaluation. While this role has a strong external focus it will continue to build on the strong collaboration, best practices and innovator networks through J&J Medtech and Innovative Medicine.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field with 10+ years of relevant experience OR Master Degree in a technical field with 8+ years OR PhD in technical field with 6+ years of relevant experience.
  • 10+ years of relevant research experience
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Project management experience is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Product development in the field of ophthalmology (devices and Pharma) including preclinical and clinical development, establishing external research partnerships, technology mapping and strategy development
  • Project Management, strong working knowledge of regulatory affairs and the FDA, contracting and legal frameworks for research/licensing agreements.
  • Knowledge of GXP quality systems.
  • Experience in business development or equity investing a plus.
  • Strong analytical and cross-functional problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Build relationships with External Innovators (companies, start-ups, universities, physicians and other individuals/entities) to identify and review technologies with respect to strategic priority areas for R&D product pipeline, enabling technologies or JJV’s new business strategies.
  • Partner with Academic/University licensing offices to identify early-stage technologies.
  • Maintain innovation dashboard to track activity and provide key stakeholders with regular updates on the status of active projects and technologies under review
  • Partner with Business Development (BD), Commercial, Finance, Clinical and Regulatory Affairs on performing technology assessments and diligence activities in support of strategic initiatives.
  • Monitor the product development goals of existing investments and collaborations
  • Partner with the legal team to develop and facilitate contract frameworks including CDA’s, research, consulting, and service agreements to support external product evaluations and partnerships
  • Technology mapping and landscaping of emerging technologies and strategic asset categories in Eye health highlighting development trends and making recommendations on opportunities for future engagement including potential research collaborations and investment etc.
  • Partner with JJV R&D teams to identify and map out current & future technology needs.
  • Collaborate to perform proof-of concept (POC) and research studies to establish the feasibility of external technologies
  • Collaborate with Johnson and Johnson Innovations (JJI) global ecosystem (Innovation Centers, JLABS) to identify emerging opportunities in Eye Health
