About The Position

Valero is looking for an experienced Loss Control Specialist to join the Loss Control Team at the Valero Port Arthur Refinery. The Loss Control Specialist provides quality and quantity assurance with emphasis on control of product losses for all movements of crude oil and petroleum products.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in custody transfer measurements, loss control and/or marine/terminal inspection related experience required.
  • Experience in lab testing, petroleum inspecting, loss control or marine expeditor preferred.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within specified timeframe.
  • Able and willing to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays, as needed.
  • Able and willing to lift 50 pounds occasionally and 20 pounds of force frequently required.
  • Able and willing to work on-site, in-person at the Valero Port Arthur Refinery, required.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies issues that expose Valero to additional costs, and based on this exposure, assumes the authority to take steps to mitigate the exposure.
  • Minimizes losses that may result from errors or inconsistencies in measurement, sampling, or testing of petroleum products by proactive attendance of custody movements for compliance with Valero published industry standards.
  • Identifies excessive product losses or quality discrepancies.
  • Ensures that API guidelines and the Company's hydrocarbon measurement procedures are followed with full documentation of events.
  • Encourages uniform petroleum cargo measurement and inspection practices.
  • Develops and implements systems which will alert management in a timely manner to potentially serious inventory and loss problems.
  • Facilitates discussions to develop and execute alternative action plans as deviations from standard practice occur.
  • Communicates with vessel officers and shore representatives to determine if additional oversight is required.
  • Verifies and confirms volumes with independent inspectors.
  • Performs physical measurement and sampling of marine vessels, railcars, trucks, storage tanks and other containers may be required.
  • Evaluates the performance of inspection companies and their inspectors.
  • Initiates record and report departmental cost savings.
  • Evaluates and reviews industry standards and policies (API/ASTM) to maintain skill set needed to implement improvements to reduce Valero's exposure to losses.
  • Witnesses custody meter proving and meter prover calibrations.
  • Encourages a favorable perception of the Company's commitment to environment, general public welfare, and profit control.
  • Reinforces the companies 'Life Saving Rules' to all employees and strive to set the example for the Loss Control group.
