About The Position

The Lab Assistant position at Roane Medical Center is a PRN/OCC role with variable hours and shifts, primarily focused on phlebotomy. The role involves covering for vacations and absences, ensuring that the laboratory operates smoothly and efficiently. The Lab Assistant will be responsible for the collection and proper handling of venous and capillary blood specimens throughout the hospital, as well as arterial blood specimens for arterial blood gas studies as required. The position also includes clerical and computer duties necessary for the role, emphasizing the importance of customer safety and comfort.

Requirements

  • Basic computer skills.
  • Medical terminology knowledge.
  • Registration and phlebotomy skills or equivalent combination of clinical/clerical skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification by NCA, ASCP or comparable institution is desirable.
  • Possession of a valid Tennessee driver's license Class D and state mandated minimum insurance coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the orientation and training of new and existing employees.
  • Responsible for care, maintenance, trouble-shooting and notification of the Manager when equipment is in need of repair or replacement (i.e. laser printers, line printers, fax machines, copying machines, etc.).
  • Responsible for maintaining proper inventory of supplies by monitoring and ordering supplies through the Matkon system as needed.
  • Responsible for the daily quality review of written physician's orders to detect errors in test orders, diagnosis, physician's name, insurance coverage, etc. and timely correction of errors.
  • Is responsible for the generation, verification, and submission of contract billing.
  • Will assist with other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager to include: Scheduling, Medical Records verification, etc.
  • Assists in the implementation and evaluation of new projects including the development of policies and procedures.
  • Local travel required.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
