About The Position

POSITION SUMMARY: The Senior Health Physicist provides health physics and waste management technical support for waste treatment and disposal facilities. The incumbent will be the technical subject matter expert on radiation safety. The Senior Health Physicist will be responsible for ensuring the safe and effective use of radiological procedures for Republic Services' operations. The incumbent will be responsible for implementation of policies and procedures in compliance of all federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety (EHS) and radiological protection regulations. The Senior Health Physicist will also provide technical health physics support to operations, quality, engineering, facilities, and supply chain functions. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Develops and implements radiation safety protocols, policies, and procedures in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. Serves as the technical point of contact for site health physics matters including radiological modeling, dose assessments, radiological safety and risk, site characterization, field instrumentation, radiological data review and validation, and radiation measurements. Works with governmental and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with environmental health and safety and other regulatory standards. May serve as Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) or Alternate RSO on a Radioactive Materials License. Works with the sales team and site technical staff to evaluate generator waste profiles for acceptance at various waste disposal facilities. Assists sites in development and/or maintenance of their monitoring programs to protect facilities and personnel from radiation hazards. Assists sites with implementation of dosimetry programs and monitor radiation exposure limits for personnel and the environment to ensure that radiation levels are not more than permissible standards. Performs annual site radiological audits at various facilities. Helps prepare for and respond to emergencies involving a loss of control of radioactive material. Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of radiological protection standards and applicable regulations.
  • Skilled in reviewing analytical data for adequacy and accuracy.
  • Proficient in the use of radiation protection instrumentation and calibration requirements.
  • Effective communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Understanding of standard practices for field documentation and records management.
  • Ability to develop characterization plans, perform radiological surveys and sampling activities and providing guidance and direction to field personnel.
  • Familiarity with radiation simulation codes such as Gold Sim, RESRAD, MCNP, Micro Shield, CAP88 etc. to design shielding, calculate detector efficiencies, estimate radiological dose, and to perform site performance assessments etc.
  • Ability to prioritize, stay focused and handle multiple, diverse responsibilities.
  • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Radiological Health, Engineering, or Physical Science or related field
  • 4 - 7 years of professional experience in Health Physics and/or Radiation Safety Program Management.

Nice To Haves

  • American Board of Health Physics- Certified Health Physicist (CHP) - preferred.
  • National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologies (NRRPT) certification - preferred.
  • Qualified and Experienced Department of Transportation (DOT) Class 7 shipper - preferred.
