About The Position

Reporting to the President, the Heavy Civil Construction Estimator will be responsible for calculating the precise costs of large-scale infrastructure projects to ensure competitive and profitable bidding. The ideal candidate will prepare detailed cost breakdowns by analyzing plans; specifications; site conditions; solicit subcontractor bids; calculate labor, material, and equipment costs, to create accurate, competitive bids; ensure project profitability and alignment with company goals. Key duties involve quantity take-offs, risk analysis, value engineering and collaborating with project teams for cost control and bid strategy.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience as a Heavy Civil Estimator, with experience in bidding earthwork, wet & dry utility and concrete flatwork projects;
  • Experience within the private and public works sector, required;
  • In-depth knowledge of heavy civil construction processes, materials and methods;
  • Proficiency with MS Office Word, Excel and Adobe Acrobat;
  • Exceptional oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Astute time management, attention to detail, accuracy, organizational, planning, effective multi-tasking, problem-solving, analytical, mathematical, follow-through and customer service skills;
  • Ability to work effectively alone and within a fast-paced, deadline-driven, collaborative team environment;
  • Valid CA driver’s license, clean and insurable driving record and own vehicle required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline, preferred;
  • Experience with PlanSwift software, preferred;

Responsibilities

  • Read, review and understand blueprints, heavy civil plans, specifications and site data for scope and requirements;
  • Prepare accurate, detailed estimates for all project phases, including cost projections for labor, materials, equipment, production rates, subcontractors, etc., using project plans and specifications;
  • Perform comprehensive measurements of project components involving earthwork, concrete and utilities, to determine material needs;
  • Solicit and evaluate quotes from subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring full coverage of the project scope;
  • Review and understand contract inclusions and exclusions;
  • Solicit, evaluate and negotiate bids from vendors, while accurately measuring and calculating quantities of work;
  • Identify potential project hurdles (e.g., weather, terrain, regulations) and factor contingencies into the final estimate;
  • Ability to clearly explain prepared bids to management and answer questions on construction means and methods;
  • Conduct visits to proposed job sites, meet with prospective clients to understand civil scopes of work, access complexity and environment impacts, before final bid submission;
  • Identify and analyze potential project risks and develop mitigation strategies;
  • Support cost management throughout the project lifecycle;
  • Work with engineers, project managers and executive leadership to align bids with company strategy and feasibility.
