About The Position

The position involves specifying, selecting, and applying protective relaying equipment, determining device settings, and developing protection, control, and automation philosophy. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of electric utility system protection principles and the ability to lead the development of company system protection philosophy, design protection and control schemes, and specify relaying and associated equipment.

Requirements

  • Engineering degree from an accredited college/university.
  • 8 years industry experience with a Professional Engineer (PE) license, or 10 years as a practicing engineer if no PE license.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electric utility system protection principles.
  • Demonstrated skills in technical analyses utilizing appropriate computer modeling techniques.
  • Strong time management, organizational, oral and written communication, interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Experience directing the work of a diverse group of engineers in the absence of the designated manager.

Responsibilities

  • Completes relay coordination analyses and determines appropriate settings for substation projects.
  • Leads the development of company system protection philosophy; design of protection, control, and substation automation schemes, and specify relaying and associated equipment.
  • Performs studies, prepares, and provides reports to executive management, internal and external customers, and acts as an expert witness in legal proceedings if required.
  • Applies technical expertise and knowledge in developing state-of-the-art solutions for large to complex protection problems, including the analysis of power system disturbances.
  • Provides leadership, training, and direction to fellow staff members, and provides technical design and project review in the absence of manager.
  • Represents company in regional forums and work groups as a technical subject matter expert on system protection issues.
  • Ensures quality control and external customer service on assigned projects by providing construction support and coordination with construction forces and proactively seeking and incorporating customer input.
  • Ensures all compliance aspects of position are known and followed; understands and complies with all policies, codes, and regulations applicable to position and company, including NERC/WECC mandates.
  • Participates in rotational weekly 24/7 on-call duties and responds to system control center calls for all relay related outages or alarms.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
