About The Position

Under the general direction of the Energy Plant Operations and Maintenance Supervisor. The Senior Energy Plant O&M Technician monitors, operates, inspects, maintains and repairs the Energy & Utilities Services Thermal Energy production, distribution and ancillary systems to ensure the continued supply of utility services to users; operates computer control consoles to monitor and control utilities system set points for Airport facilities; Assists in the supervision, training and inspection of the work of the Energy Plant Operations/Maintenance Technician while on assigned shift. This position is responsible for ensuring that other business unit supervisory and management personnel remain informed of key events or situations impacting equipment and system operation, integrity, or reliability.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent.
  • Four (4) years of industrial power plant operations, maintenance, or related field experience involving, high pressure boilers, electrical generators and/or distribution systems, industrial chilled water/HVAC systems, and/or chemical water treatment and purification systems; OR Formal training in one of the following industrial trades:
  • Electrical systems.
  • HVAC.
  • Plumbing.
  • Welding, pipefitting, or millwright work.
  • For internal candidates, two (2) years of industrial power plant experience in operations or maintenance of high-pressure boilers, electrical distribution systems, chilled water/HVAC systems, and/or chemical water treatment and purification systems; AND Successful completion of the Energy Plant Operator Technician Training Program within Energy & Utilities Services.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above.
  • Certified in 3rd Class Stationary Engineering License or ability to obtain it within one year from date of hire.
  • Certified in Wastewater Operator Class D or ability to obtain it within one year from date of hire.
  • Certified in Water System Operator Class D or ability to obtain it within one year from date of hire.
  • Certified in universal refrigeration from an EPA approved trainer or ability to obtain it within one year from date of hire.
  • Must pass a medical physical examination.
  • Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of operating characteristics of high-pressure boilers, chillers, pumps and industrial heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Knowledge of industrial utilities production and distribution.
  • Knowledge of the use of computer control systems applicable to the operation of plant mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of the tools, techniques, and materials applicable to the maintenance and repair of industrial plant mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions applicable to a utilities plant operation.
  • Skill in the use of the tools and materials applicable to the operations and maintenance of an industrial energy plant.
  • Ability to train, assign and check the work of others.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to monitor and operate a computer console to detect and analyze malfunctions/defects in systems and equipment.
  • Ability to read and use blueprints, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Ability to keep accurate records of maintenance performed.
  • Ability to pass a medical examination.
  • Must obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Airport Identification/Access Badge (badge) in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements in Chapter 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 1500 et al., and DFW Airport’s Airport Security Program within thirty (30) days from date of employment and maintain qualification for a SIDA badge upon each badge renewal.
  • This is a designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport’s Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass a drug test prior to employment and to submit to drug screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the safety sensitive position.
  • This is a designated Essential Employee position as defined in DFW Airport’s Categories and Classifications Administrative Policy and Procedure. An essential employee is one whose attendance is required to maintain airport operations during an emergency or inclement weather situation.
  • Must successfully complete Energy Plant Operator Training Program within six (6) months from date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the safe operation and reliability of Energy & Utilities Services Systems while on shift.
  • Monitors and operates district-cooling centrifugal chillers and associated support/distribution systems, district-heating steam boilers and associated support/distribution systems, potable water pump stations, reclaimed water pump station, sanitary sewer lift stations, stormwater pretreatment plant, source isolation deicing systems, and electrical distribution systems up to 25kV.
  • Maintains and repairs energy plant and related facilities’ mechanical and electrical equipment including pumps, valves, compressors, boilers, chillers, motors, and other components.
  • Depending upon specific area of maintenance expertise, assists in performing the following:
  • Repair and maintenance of industrial-size electrical systems;
  • Repair and maintenance of industrial-size HVAC systems;
  • Plumbing; and/or,
  • Welding, pipefitting and millwright work.
  • May lead work crews for repair and maintenance projects involving incumbent’s area of expertise; acts as trainer to provide other E&US personnel with a working knowledge of the specific industrial trade being utilized.
  • Starts up, operates, and shuts down mechanical and distribution systems and water distribution systems, such as gas/oil fired steam boilers, centrifugal compressor chillers, motors, generators, pumps, switchgear, and computer peripheral equipment.
  • Surveys the operation of all central utilities systems throughout the Airport for defects/malfunctions; determines cause and effect of defects/malfunctions; initiates corrective action directly or through work orders; notifies E&US supervisors or employees when malfunctions or outages occur.
  • During the absence of supervisory personnel, such as after normal working hours, failures, or emergencies, exercises the responsibility to make decisive and judgmental decisions to
  • Authorize changes in energy plant and other utility system configurations in support of maintenance, lock-out/tag out and casualty restoration. Notifies appropriate management personnel and IOC as soon as possible to report actions taken.
  • Maintains documentation, as assigned, on adjustments, corrective action to defective and malfunctioning plant equipment.
  • Responds appropriately to customer complaints of system failure or malfunction.
  • Analytically and chemically analyzes boiler feed water, condensate water, condenser water, chilled and hot water systems in Board facilities.
  • Assists with training and overseeing the work of the Energy Plant Operations/Maintenance Technician while on assigned shift.
  • Compiles operational data and maintains logs for management review and comparison with historical records. Communicates reportable events, including operating trends and limitations to oncoming shift employees.
  • Cleans and maintains hand and stationary tools and machines; performs periodic tool inventory.
  • Performs duties to maintain the appearance of the energy plant, tunnels, equipment, and systems as may be assigned.
