This role is part of Project Formulation team in Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin’s vision of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The Product Formulation team is an innovative, fast-paced group of experts dedicated to developing and maturing next-generation technologies and products essential for Blue Origin’s future missions. We thrive in a results-oriented, prototype-driven, and fail-fast environment. We are looking for an experienced Embedded Avionics Engineer who will be responsible for design, fabrication, testing and deployment of high-performance controller boards, motor drivers, and power distribution systems. This role also includes developing firmware for sensors, motors and control units. You will collaborate with cross-functional, multidisciplinary teams and often work on multiple embedded hardware and software efforts simultaneously. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related discipline
  • 7+ years of electronic control design and electrical hardware design experience
  • Experience with firmware development for embedded applications
  • Experience with eCAD software
  • Deep understanding of microcontrollers, RTOS and embedded Linux
  • Experience with verification of firmware, hardware or control systems
  • Experience with aerospace vehicle Avionics systems development, integration, and test
  • Familiarity with power electronics hardware development, such as developing high voltage switching, high voltage and power regulation
  • Understanding of most of the following parts and their usage: ADCs, op amps, power supplies (linear, LDO, DC/DC), FPGAs, MCUs, and MOSFETs
  • Knowledge of common communication methods, such as RS232, RS422, I2C, SPI, LVDS, Ethernet, or CAN
  • Ability to reach across discipline boundaries to solve integration issues spanning hardware, firmware, and controls
  • Desire to work hands-on, both independently and as part of a team, throughout the development and production phases of the electronic assembly product lifecycle
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and supply to a culture of collaboration

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related discipline
  • 10+ years of experience in design, development, test, and operation of complex electrical systems
  • Strong C/C++ programming skills
  • Experience with various motor controls, power conversion topologies, and control systems
  • Experience with low-level hardware interaction, computer architecture, microcontrollers, and digital electronics
  • Experience with analog, digital or mixed-signal circuit design, including analysis, simulation, test, troubleshooting, and part selection
  • Knowledge of signal integrity, power, grounding, and general board layout principles
  • Knowledge of radiation effects on electronics and how to apply this to designs targeting space applications

Responsibilities

  • Own the full development lifecycle from conceptual design and schematic capture to board bring-up, qualification testing, and production deployment for high-performance controller boards, motor drivers, and power distribution systems
  • Perform hardware bring-up, debugging, and verification using lab equipment and support system testing and environmental testing
  • Create detailed and accurate electronic schematics using industry-standard tools such as Altium or Cadence. Utilize simulation tools to validate circuit performance across a range of operating conditions.
  • Design complex analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuit boards for harsh environments
  • Develop inverters, motor controllers, power filters, and gate drivers
  • Generate schematics, BOMs, worst-case circuit analysis (WCCA), and design artifacts for regulatory compliance
  • Experience with implementing high-performance motor control algorithms in resource constrained FPGAs and MCUs
  • Develop firmware for sensors, motors and control units
  • Debug complex hardware/software interactions and resolve defects
  • Create and maintain technical documentation for firmware and processes
  • Develop comprehensive test plans that cover all functional and non-functional requirements
