About The Position

The Sr Edit/Media Specialist at Rutgers University is responsible for acquiring and evaluating manuscripts and book proposals for the University Press. This role involves presenting books to the editorial committee, signing approximately 25 titles per year, and generating significant income for the Press. The position requires a high level of independence and negotiation skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders within the university.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience in a relevant academic field.
  • Three years of publishing experience.
  • Management experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Moderate level of computer literacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to sign books across various sales categories.
  • Public visibility on discussion panels and a wide network in publishing professional circles.
  • Ability to improve systems and work well with a shared assistant.
  • Strong office experience.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire and evaluate manuscripts and book proposals in designated fields.
  • Present books to the editorial committee of the Press.
  • Sign about 25 titles per year and turn over 20 to 25 titles to the production director annually.
  • Negotiate with authors within previously agreed parameters.
  • Generate approximately $300,000 of Press income each year through signed titles.
