About The Position

IEEE is seeking a Senior Director of Technical Activities (TA) Operations to lead the business and operational functions that support IEEE’s global community of technical societies and councils. This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for driving operational excellence, managing budgets and contracts, and ensuring alignment across the organization to advance IEEE’s mission. Reporting to the Managing Director of Technical Activities, the Senior Director oversees a team of 12+ staff and manages a combined budget of approximately $30M. This role requires strategic oversight of operations, people management, and financial administration, as well as strong collaboration with volunteers, staff leaders, and cross-organizational partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required; advanced degree (MBA or equivalent) preferred.
  • 15–20 years of progressive experience in association or non-profit management, operations, or business administration.
  • Strong understanding of contracts, procurement, and HR processes required.
  • Prior people leadership experience essential.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills with volunteer leaders and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and financial management capabilities; experience managing multimillion-dollar budgets.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive process improvement.
  • Comfort with complex organizations and matrixed structures.
  • Technically savvy with experience using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Oracle, and related systems.
  • Valid passport and driver’s license required.
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. (no employer-sponsored immigration support available).

Responsibilities

  • Operational Leadership: Provide strategic and day-to-day direction for TA business and administrative functions, ensuring efficient operations and strong alignment across IEEE societies and councils.
  • People Management: Lead and develop a high-performing team; oversee staffing, performance management, workspace planning, and staff engagement activities.
  • Financial Management: Oversee a $30M budget including forecasting, reporting, and cost optimization; manage Society and Future Directions program budgets to meet financial goals.
  • Contract Administration: Manage all TA and Society service contracts (excluding conferences); ensure compliance with IEEE sourcing, legal, and financial policies.
  • Awards Management: Oversee the Technical Activities Awards and Recognition process; ensure compliance with governance policies and coordination with the IEEE Foundation.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner closely with IEEE volunteer leaders, internal departments, and cross-functional teams to advance shared objectives and improve operational effectiveness.
  • Special Projects: Lead or support organizational projects, risk assessments, and new initiatives in partnership with IT, Risk Management, and other functional areas.
