About The Position

Under the direction of the School of Medicine (SOM) Assistant Dean for Data Analytics and Business Intelligence and in collaboration with the Associate Dean for SOM Finance, SOM Controller, and SOM Finance Directors, drive the development, implementation, and maintenance of enterprise-wide data strategies that support Duke University’s missions in clinical care, research, and education. The successful incumbent will gather and analyze data, prepare reports and visualizations to drive business analytics, and assist with the development and maintenance of internal dashboards to improve data access across the School of Medicine Administrative Units and Departments, Centers, and Institutes. This role oversees data governance, business intelligence, and analytics initiatives across the School of Medicine and Duke University Health System. The Senior Director advises executive leadership, fosters data-driven decision-making, and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to enhance data infrastructure, integration, and innovation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in analytics, statistics, computer science, public health, or related technical fields.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in data analytics, BI, or governance, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Experience in full-lifecycle development processes related to data modeling/warehousing, business intelligence, and application development in an academic environment.
  • Strong analytical background working with relational databases and demonstrated ability to design and coordinate large-scale projects.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI).
  • Working knowledge of SQL and experience with other querying languages (SAS, Python, R).
  • Familiarity with Duke-specific systems and data platforms like SAP, BW, SPS, WebCentral/Archibus, highly desired.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence at all levels and across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and connect data from multiple systems and work with business colleagues to translate complex data into meaningful business insights.
  • Familiarity with higher education or healthcare data systems.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage strategic projects.
  • Excellent organization, prioritization, and time management capabilities, including the ability to manage and lead teams through multiple complex projects simultaneously, driving them to completion and achieving success.
  • Strong analytical capabilities, including the ability to think critically and strategically about financial and business issues and to propose and implement change. Ability to assess and resolve problems in a complex, interdisciplinary setting.
  • Strong business acumen; knowledge of operations, budget/finance, management, and organizational development.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, changing environment, take initiative, be flexible, and perform multiple tasks maintaining a high level of autonomy and accountability.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive data strategy that aligns with the School of Medicine’s missions in research, education, and clinical excellence. Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to align data initiatives with institutional priorities.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across SOM Finance, Administration, and IT, as well as SOM Departments, Centers and Institutes to develop a roadmap for scalable, insight-driven data use. Have in-depth understanding of the business units and how they operate to help drive and align the strategy with institutional priorities.
  • Engage with constituents across the SOM to understand data needs and deliver actionable insights.
  • Serve as an advisor to the school and department/unit leadership on data-driven decision-making.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage data for institutional growth, operational efficiency, and academic innovation. Quickly iterate novel solutions to challenge data-related problems.
  • Shape and conduct approaches for collecting, organizing, and analyzing data, including methods for collecting data when there is limited or no data.
  • Work closely with leadership, administrators, and data-focused positions in business functional areas to define project priorities, scope, approach, resource requirements, timing deliverables, change management, and funding needs.
  • Support strategic planning and improvement initiatives based on data findings.
  • Develop metrics to measure the impact of the team’s projects and initiatives.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to quality and outcomes. Provide insights to support strategic planning and continuous improvement.
  • Lead cross-functional teams and collaborate with stakeholders to drive data-informed decision-making.
  • Represent the School of Medicine in University-wide analytics forums.
  • Provide support to the Assistant Dean for Data Analytics and Business Intelligence as needed and required by the assignment of new responsibilities to the Data Analytics teams.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and optimization of enterprise BI platforms and tools (Tableau, Power BI). Ensure BI solutions are scalable, secure, aligned with user needs, and provide actionable insights.
  • Enable self-service analytics and reporting capabilities Enable self-service analytics for department and central users.
  • Produce compelling and intuitive data visualizations to drive comprehension of complex topics and concepts across a broad range of stakeholders. Ensure reports are version-controlled, consistent, and insightful.
  • Work with business users to analyze, define, and document systems, data sources, and business requirements for analytical needs related to project objectives.
  • Partner with IT and institutional data teams to ensure seamless integration of data sources across research, clinical, and administrative systems.
  • Ensure data architecture supports scalability, security, and performance. Support the development and maintenance of data warehouses, data marts, lakes, and pipelines.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and methodologies to enhance analytics capabilities.
  • Partner with IT to integrate data across systems while ensuring scalable and secure data architecture.
  • Establish and ensure adherence to a set of guiding principles for data warehousing and analytic practice.
  • Implement access controls and review mechanisms to protect sensitive information.
  • Establish and communicate governance frameworks, policies, and stewardship programs.
  • Develop and execute training to support data governance and stewardship to support user’s ability to access, interpret, and act on data.
  • Promote data literacy and ethical data use across Departments, Centers, and Institutes.
  • Lead initiatives to improve data quality across systems and platforms.
