About The Position

The Senior Director of Commercial Programming leads the budgeting, booking, and execution of a diverse portfolio of commercial events and concerts. This role is responsible for driving commercial departmental revenue, cultivating and managing relationships with co-promoters, agents, artists, managers and rental partners, and identifying new commercial opportunities beyond on-site programming. In partnership with the Vice President of Programming & Education, the Senior Director supports the development and achievement of annual work plan goals, ensuring programs reflect community diversity, deliver exceptional guest experiences, and maximize attendance and revenue. Reporting to the Vice President, this position oversees the day-to-day operations of Commercial Programming, providing strategic and operational leadership across all related activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred. 5+ years programming experience working in a multi-use, multi-venue facility. Non-profit arts experience is a plus.
  • Must have at least 3 years of supervisory/management experience. Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, develop and motivate teams to an ever-increasing level of performance, fostering an inclusive, positive and empowering culture and work environment.
  • Experienced with contract negotiations and strong fiscal management skills including budgeting and event settlements. Must be able to complete complex mathematical calculations.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to present ideas confidently and persuasively. Ability to maintain a high level of poise and professionalism in all circumstances.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize duties and schedules with high attention to detail.
  • Strong Microsoft Office and related technology skills (venue management and ticketing systems).

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute plans for presenting a diverse variety of performances that balance artistic ambition with strong financial management.
  • Lead Commercial Programming of popular music, comedy, orchestras, jazz, dance, residencies, world music, and varietal/experiential genres on-site and at other partner venues.
  • Oversee the efficient processing of Commercial rental inquiries from first contact to settlement.
  • Negotiate and oversee the administration of Commercial Programming contracts, adhering to internal procedures of approval (ex. VP, Programming, CFO and CEO).
  • Develop and monitor budgets, pricing strategies, show advancing and financial settlements.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure smooth and successful planning and execution of performances/events. Provide timely and effective communication.
  • Supervise organizational venue calendar and scheduling for all spaces and usage. Maximize calendar activity and progress towards annual goals. Develop plans to address shortfalls.
  • Cultivate and foster relationships with local, regional and national arts groups, promoters, artists, and agents.
  • Ensure best practices for systems and workflow processes. Review, research, recommend and implement new programs/processes as needed to improve operation effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with programming team on departmental strategic plans, work plans, and budgets.
  • Accountable for administrative responsibilities including recruiting, scheduling, payroll, and budgets. Interviews, selects, trains, supervises, mentors and evaluates performance of team for the efficient operation of the department. Schedules and directs colleagues on their work assignments. Conducts 1:1 with direct reports. Demonstrates service-oriented leadership.
  • Follow and support all operational policies and procedures. Assimilate into the arts center culture through understanding, supporting and demonstrating the core values.
  • Maintain a professional and friendly relationship with other departments, colleagues, and partners.
  • Able to remain calm under pressure. Ability to work effectively with internal and external customers, some of whom will require high levels of patience, tact, and diplomacy. Maintain Dr. Phillips Center standards of customer service at all times.
