About The Position

Travelers is seeking a Sr. Director, Architecture to join our organization as we grow and transform our Enterprise Technology Solutions organization. Our Architects are responsible for designing and guiding the technology vision that enables business transformation, specializing in creating enterprise-wide solutions that bridge current capabilities with future possibilities. This strategic position requires expertise in cloud-native technologies, APIs, AI/ML, and emerging platforms to establish scalable architectures where business applications can evolve and thrive. The ideal candidate orchestrates the technical strategy that empowers development teams - defining target states, creating technology roadmaps, and establishing architectural frameworks that accelerate innovation while maintaining standards and governance. As the essential bridge between business strategy and technical implementation, this role directly impacts organizational agility, system integration, and the enterprise's ability to rapidly adapt and scale technology solutions across the business landscape. As a leader, you will provide visionary leadership that inspires architectural excellence while mentoring talent and fostering collaboration. You will strategically align enterprise architecture capabilities with business objectives, effectively communicate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders, and make architecture-driven decisions that optimize technology investments. Success requires balancing deep architectural expertise with business acumen while creating an environment where teams feel empowered to innovate and deliver architectural solutions that advance Travelers' digital transformation initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
  • 7 additional years of architecture/software engineering experience.
  • 2 years of technical leadership experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s in technology related field or equivalent, with 8 to 10 years of architecture experience.
  • Advanced level architecture and recent hands-on strong engineering experience with modern technologies. This strategic position requires expertise in cloud-native technologies, APIs, AI/ML, and emerging platforms to establish scalable architectures where business applications can evolve and thrive.
  • Successful execution of complex, large scale technology strategies and initiatives.
  • Extensive leadership experience with a proven ability to influence enterprise-wide technology and business decisions.
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong record of mentoring technology architects and engineers, as well as leading large, cross-functional teams to achieve strategic outcomes. They should demonstrate the ability to align multi-team goals and architectural strategies with the organization’s mission while effectively balancing long-term planning with day-to-day operational priorities.
  • Advanced leadership skills are essential, including the ability to coach and develop talent, foster collaboration across engineering and business units, and drive innovation through knowledge sharing and empowerment. This individual will be a visible, trusted leader who inspires and motivates teams to deliver transformative business and technology results.
  • Extensive experience working an agile operational model.
  • Advanced experience supporting transformational change.
  • Able to adjust plans, priorities and strategies in response to changing circumstances.
  • Insurance technology experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of value creation and business capability models.
  • Strong knowledge of the insurance industry.
  • Strong experience identifying and analyzing current/future problems and opportunities, valuating information to understand root causes, and exploring alternative solutions for effective decision-making.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve mutually responsible results.
  • Extensive experience exercising sound judgment, making decisions and committing to a position.
  • Advanced and effective verbal, written and listening communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading one or more architecture teams within one or more segments or domains for a single business unit.
  • Define target state technology architecture and roadmaps.
  • Ensure alignment of initiatives to target state, enterprise standards and business objectives.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to capitalize on technology advances through analysis of key industry and technology trends to assess potential impact on the enterprise.
  • Define and lead technology proof of concepts to ensure feasibility of new technology architecture solutions.
  • Drive continuous technology transformation and modernization, including to minimize technical debt.
  • Provide thought leadership in pursuit of modern architecture principles and technology modernization.
  • Collaborate with and influence leadership within Technology and Business to develop architecture priorities and direction to enable business imperatives.
  • Optimize talent strategy to ensure proper mix of resources.
  • Proactively attract, develop, engage, and retain high performing talent.
  • Set clear goals, provide ongoing feedback, and hold talent accountable.
  • Promptly address performance issues.
  • Ensure proper alignment of team skills with technology direction and execution proof of technologies.
  • Prepare and deliver communications to convey architectural direction.
  • Drive strategic relationships and champion buy-in.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
