The Supplier Development Engineer will collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Sourcing and the supplier on all activity required to effectively manage supplier quality requirements & supplier development. Primary areas of focus will be supplier NDT program, continuous improvement, and defect resolution. The SDE has primary ownership and responsibility for supplier quality throughout Swagelok operations for assigned commodities. The successful candidate will possess demonstrated expertise in ultrasonic testing, with Level III certification strongly preferred. This role will be responsible for supporting internal non-destructive testing (NDT) operations and overseeing supplier NDT programs to ensure compliance with quality and regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, technical or quality-related field required.
  • 5+ years’ experience in manufacturing process design and development, quality planning or engineering, and/or quality control supervision.
  • ASQ-CQE preferred.
  • 6-12 months ISO/QS9000 implementation and/or auditing, or ASQ-CQA preferred.
  • Level III UT preferred.
  • Knowledge of steel-making operations for long bar products also preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, including basic Word, PowerPoint and Project, and intermediate-level Excel.
  • Advanced statistical data analysis skills.
  • Working knowledge of statistical software such as NCSS, Statistica or Minitab.
  • Strong knowledge of metrology and general mechanical inspection methods and procedures.
  • Familiarity with Total Quality and Lean Manufacturing concepts preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced problem-solving training preferred (SPC/statistical analysis; DOE).
  • Demonstrates proficiency in preventative control planning and process validation methods.
  • Disciplined problem solving, troubleshooting quality and manufacturing systems, and auditing.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and manages the overall supplier quality development and strategy activities.
  • Develops positive relationships with suppliers.
  • Performs audits of existing suppliers, including desk audits of quality manuals and data sheets, site audits of processes and systems and annual assessments of performance.
  • Completes and communicates supplier quality system audit reports, manages the Corrective Action process for audit findings as required and drives completion within expected timeframe.
  • Performs supplier selection related activities for potential suppliers.
  • Identifies, drives, and influences improvement activities at suppliers in the pursuit of perfect quality.
  • Initiates and/or facilitates resolution of problems related to Swagelok specifications or methods.
  • Participates in establishing and maintaining procedures, processes and specifications related to assigned commodities and suppliers.
  • Executes the Qualified Supplier Process program by providing training and approving supplier packages.
  • Coordinates gauge or process capability studies, first article inspections, validation plans and evaluation requests as needed.
  • Leads technical input for strategic sourcing projects, including assessment of supplier capability, specification review and support of project implementation and part transitions.
  • Manages medium to large department level projects intended to develop or improve systems and processes to meet Global Sourcing requirements and goals.
  • Trains and develops suppliers in the application of sound engineering and quality principles.
  • Assists in the development of other Supplier Development Engineers.
  • Provides direct internal support and acts as internal resource regarding the performance, capability, application, and inspection methods for supplied product.
  • Leads technical discussions with suppliers to identify and implement improvements in products and processes.
