Our Senior Development Engineer – Energy Services will work out of our Midwest Division, located in Edina, Minnesota. Reporting to the Vice President of Development and Design, this position takes ownership of project development activities while collaborating with senior engineers on complex, multidisciplinary assignments. Projects primarily support public-sector clients and include HVAC upgrades, building retrofits, lighting, controls, and renewable energy solutions. The Senior Development Engineer – Energy Services will independently lead the engineering development of select energy efficiency, renewable energy, and building renovation projects. This role represents is designed for engineers who demonstrate strong technical fundamentals, sound judgment, and the ability to deliver projects with minimal supervision. This role requires travel within the Midwest region approximately 30% of the time. Travel may include, but is not limited to, client meetings, site visits, field verifications, and building assessments. The salary range is $125,000-$160,000. The salary may vary within the range based on factors such as location of the role, and a candidate’s experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical field
  • 12+ years of relevant experience in building systems, construction, or energy services
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
  • Demonstrated ability to independently execute engineering tasks and manage smaller projects
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of using Bluebeam REVU
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with energy audits, energy modeling, commissioning, or renewable energy systems
  • Experience working with public-sector or institutional clients

Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering development of small to mid-sized projects from initial assessment through design, proposal, and construction support
  • Conduct and lead site visits to document existing mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and building systems
  • Coordinate project development activities including conceptually designing the technical and financial components of the job to include accurate cost and savings estimates
  • Perform ASHRAE Level I and II energy audits; support Level III audits under senior engineer guidance
  • Gather and analyze utility consumption and energy performance data to develop baseline facility performance and identify trends
  • Identify and quantify energy conservation measures (ECMs) and develop savings calculations
  • Prepare conceptual and preliminary engineering designs, cost estimates, and scopes of work
  • Develop, implement, and enforce company-wide engineering and project development best practices
  • Contribute to proposals, including technical narratives, exhibits, and client presentations
  • Coordinate with internal teams, subcontractors, and external consultants to support project delivery
  • Review, analyze and prepare conceptual and detailed design documents, bid documents, cost estimates, drawings, and specifications for facility improvement measures (FIMs)
  • Coordinate with vendors and installation contractors for scoping and pricing or proposed FIMs
  • Provide construction-phase support, including submittal review, field coordination, and issue resolution
  • Track project schedules, budgets, and deliverables; communicate status and risks proactively
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, codes, and company procedures
  • Maintains an ongoing relationship with our customers, providing technical consultation on current and future facility needs
  • Serve as a role model and mentor junior engineering staff and support team development
  • Serve as a peer reviewer for calculations, estimates and scopes or work prepared by fellow engineering team members across the organization
