Piper Companies is seeking a seasoned Sr. Database Engineer with 3+ years in cloud environments, specifically Microsoft, and who considers themselves a subject-matter-expert (SME) in all things Azure, to join an enterprise-level healthcare company in the greater Washington, DC area. This role is full-time and operates on a hybrid work schedule (2-3 days onsite per week).

  • Design and implement data pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, and Databricks for ingestion, transformation, and loading of structured and unstructured data.
  • Develop and maintain data lake architectures leveraging Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS).
  • Optimize data workflows for performance, scalability, and cost efficiency in cloud environments.
  • Implement data governance and security standards using Azure Purview, encryption, and role-based access control.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define data models, integration strategies, and reporting requirements.
  • Provide recommendations on data architecture and structure to ensure alignment with business needs and best practices.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot data processes, ensuring high availability and reliability.
  • Support real-time and batch data processing using Azure services and modern ETL frameworks.
  • Document technical designs, data flows, and operational procedures.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering with a focus on Microsoft Azure Cloud technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Databricks, and Azure Data Lake.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and Python for data transformation and automation.
  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile development practices.
  • Knowledge of data security and compliance (e.g., HIPAA, encryption, data masking).
  • Experience with data modeling, ETL processes, and performance tuning in cloud environments.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills.
  • Experience with Power BI for data visualization.
  • Familiarity with Azure Machine Learning and advanced analytics.
  • Understanding of data governance frameworks and metadata management.
