We're actively seeking a talented Sr Data Scientist to join our SMS Data Science team in Newport Beach, CA or Omaha, NE. Relocation assistance may be provided. As a Senior Data Scientist, you'll play a key role in Pacific Life's underwriting transformation journey as we use machine learning and AI to modernize our underwriting workflow.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's, Master's or Ph.D. in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field
  • 8 + years experience working in Technology with focus on Data Science initiatives
  • Strong proficiency in programming languages such as Python and SQL.
  • Experience using LLMs to build agentic workflows
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks and libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, scikit-learn).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Proven experience as a Data Scientist in the life/health insurance industry.
  • Knowledge of life insurance underwriting processes and regulations is a strong plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of data-driven models and algorithms to enhance the underwriting process.
  • Use AI to process unstructured medical data and incorporate it into our models
  • Automate processes using LLMs and agentic frameworks
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including underwriting, actuarial, and technology, to identify opportunities for process improvement and innovation.
  • Analyze large and complex datasets to extract actionable insights and support decision-making.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and advancements in data science and machine learning.
  • Mentor and guide junior data scientists and analysts.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders through clear and concise reports and presentations.
